What makes a good fantasy series is worldbuilding. Made in Abyss and Mushoku Tensei have distinct societies that emerged from their unique environments. Lore is an important aspect to the worldbuilding and the narrative in both series. These series are able to showcase these strengths when their main characters become adventurers. Made in the Abyss quickly begins the adventure, but relies on overt exposition throughout the series. Mushoku Tensei takes an entire cour to introduce and build a fantasy world that will only be explored in Mushoku Tensei Part 2. Although these two produce different vibes, they are fundamentally the same.
Both of them involve children(?) travelling/ getting thrown into an unknown world where they meet people of all sorts and survive their respective brutal environments with many twists and turns
Both of them also features many emotional moments and intense scenes, with a bit of that child Ecchi on the side. being the for front of criticisms for both series
Both start of in season 1 as light hearted but slowly gets more screwed up the deeper you go before halting in one town in season 2
