The story isn’t pointless it’s actually kind of important cause it literally shows the events of the Internet corruption before it became a thing in the real world that’s a pretty great plot if you ask me.

I watched this show when I first started doing cardio to lose some weight and I watched it to make time go by faster and each every episode I was amazed at how confusing it was but by the end I pretty much put the pieces together and understood the plot or a certain extent.

I regret watching lain and wasting my time Its so out of context and boring as hell, characters are like alien, story is like tangled headphones. Sorry to everyone who loves this anime but for me I hated every second of it.

Lain is definitely a series that a lot of people will not enjoy, it has a niche audience that it is targeting and for that audience it is amazing.

First time I watched it I didn't get it, and hated it because I was so confused. Then I slept on it for a few weeks, and started figuring it out, and eventually came full circle and ended up loving it.

It's heavily metaphorical and the point is not for anything that's going on to be explained. It abandons all traditional storytelling conventions to just talk about what the author wanted to say. If you can accept that, you can come to love Lain. I still can't say it's "enjoyable to watch". It's boring as hell and nothing happens for entire episodes at a time. But it's important, especially today. It's themes honestly helped me work through a lot of my own personal shit with human connection - once I finally figured out the themes after a year of thinking and reading analysises of it, and also once I played through the PS1 game (which goes way deeper into everything and makes everything "make sense").

I always describe Lain to people as a messy abstract art project, where the end result is not necessarily pretty, but all of the artists's emotions are somehow on full display and it makes you feel... something. You wouldn't go into an artists' studio and look at their vent pieces and say "hey this looks like shit", because that's not the point of those pieces. The point is to get out complex emotions and themes that are extremely difficult to talk about in regular language.

It's also important to note that this series is a sequel to the original PS1 game and is framed with the assumption that the viewer has played that game. It makes wayyyyy more sense once you do. Just, huge trigger warning for that game, it's a lot more dark than the anime.

The "game" is just navigating through menus and listening to some audios, you unlock more audios on the go, and it will take several several hours to unlock everything SO if you prefer you can just read a transcription of everything instead, I got it some time ago and still have it on my archives so I uploaded here if someone wants to read, it's only 695 pages so a very light read LOL
