Anime Relations: Lupin III: Part III
Story

The guys stake out a high-end jewelry store, Mackintosh. Out on their boat, they're passed by another boat and Zenigata. Lupin's fishing line gets caught, and he ends up taking the kid. When the kid comes to, he's excited to meet Lupin, and he's always been a huge fan. He asks Lupin to be his apprentice, and despite Lupin never saying yes, he follows along anyway. That night, Fujiko asks Lupin if she can take him off their hands. He gladly agrees, but Jigen says there must be a reason if she wants him. His name is Mikhail Cazenove, and his late father, Vladimir Cazenove, was a genius scientist who invented a machine that could purify salt water to fresh water. Everyone wants to get ahold of Mikhail since he's also a genius with photographic memory. Fujiko is kidnapped, and Mackintosh warns Lupin that if he trades in Mikhail, he'll get Fujiko back. They devise a plan, but suddenly, Mikhail sacrifices himself so the guys can't rescue him. The next day, they set off bombs in the Mackintosh Jewelry building. Which at the top of, Makintosh is probing Mikhail's brain for the location of the data. Gas from the explosion knocks out all of Mackintosh's men so the gang can successfully take Mikhail back and steal all of the jewelry. Mikhail is now able to present the research to many nations.

A fairly fun episode, but nothing special again. I was kind of hoping this would be a case of the kid detective from Part 2, but Mikhail is a lot more annoying. The plot is fairly standard: swap the stolen merchandise type deal; we've seen this a billion times before. Where I don't feel as bored by this episode for whatever reason, I guess the climax was fun enough to engage me; there's nothing in this episode that particularly stands out.

Characters

I wanted to like Mikhail because some kid characters in Lupin can be pretty endearing, but Mikhail was pretty annoying. I hated that he upskirted every woman he saw. Like the fact that Lupin was the reserved one in this episode is an extremely unfortunate thing, you're really low if that ever happens. But credit is where credit is due; he was able to give suffering countries all across the globe access to free drinking water. A lot of good people are bad guys if that makes sense. Let's hope that as he grows up and hopefully continues to make more world-changing inventions, he'll grow out of creepiness. He is a 10-year-old boy; I understand that's the age. But I'm not about to be one of those "boy will be boys" people; own your mistakes!!!
