Story

Guerlain, an avid collector of paintings, is at a gallery show for Renoir works, and one catches his eye. He wishes he could own it, and just then, a girl hands him a paper and points back to Fujiko. The note says to watch the news tonight, and she'll be able to give the painting to him for the right price. When Guerlain watches the news, it reports a stolen painting from Lupin and his gang, which doesn't bother him as long as he gets it. Fujiko comes by that night to give him the painting and asks if she can see his collection. He gives in, and they decide to find a place to put his new painting, and when Fujiko puts her hands around the frame, she's shocked to find a microphone left by Lupin. She cries into Guerlain's arms, saying that Lupin can't trust her, and he says she can stay with him for now. The guys break in using a bazooka. But before they can make off with anything, Guerlain's bodyguard stops them. However, they still left a massive hole in the wall in the middle of his private collection, so Fujiko tells Guerlain to transfer it somewhere else until the wall can be repaired. The next day, he does just that and sends out a bunch of trucks to trick Lupin. Lupin tries to contact Fujiko to get the details on which one it is, but Geurlain won't reveal it initially. That is, until he has a few drinks. Fujiko tells Lupin it's the very first truck that turned left, but Geurlain happens to catch her communicating with Lupin. As Lupin approaches the truck, the ones to the sides and behind him close in, but Goemon cuts the first one just in time. When they see what's inside, there's nothing but Zenigata, and the paintings never left. Zenigata returns to Guerlain to inform him that Lupin and his gang have escaped and need to move the paintings to safety now. He uses the Zantetsuken to cut around the walls, wraps the entire thing in wire, and then attaches it to a crane. Revealing he's Lupin at the last second before hauling off with his complete collection.

This was a pretty action packed episode! I really enjoyed the car chase. It was channeling Cagliostro's like nothing else. It's funny how this random episode got such a great chase scene thrown in the middle of it. Serously, it was very dynamic with the expressivness at which Lupin maneuvers the Fiat. Even down to the way Jigen shoots at the trucks is very reminiscent of Cagliostro.

And super, super minor side point, but they referenced Popeye of all things?!? When Lupin is trying to fight the bodyguard, he throws a can of spinach at him and plays a copyright safe version of Popeye's theme. I was not expecting this at all but it's cool. I like Popeye, kinda. It was just so random but that's pretty cool I guess.

Characters

Geurlain was not it man. I didn't really have a problem with outside of being a bit of lech, but then once he finds out Fujiko betrayed him, he tries to push his advances on her. WHICH IS NEVER OKAY AND HE SHOULD BE BURNED AT THE STAKE FOR ATTEMPTING IT. Obviously, he didn't get very far thank god, and he had his whole creepy art collection taken from him in the process.

Lupin speaking Spanish to those girls was so funny. He just pulls up with the fluent Spanish. Which isn't so surprising considering Lupin probably knows every language under the sun, but you never actually hear him speak much of any. On the rare occasion, he might say "hi" or "bye" in whatever language corresponds to the country they're in for that episode, but this is great. I don't speak Spanish at all, so I don't want to say outright that Lupin is amazing, but it sounds pretty good. It's just the way he can spout it off. But honestly, that just seems like Yasuo Yamada and his ability as an amazing voice actor. I really wish we had more moments like this, though; they're great. I love that Jigen kept calling him a lech, too. Which is "tsukebe" in Japanese, something my mom taught me to say at a very young age! I love my mom.

Art/Animation

Another little guy! Very very similar to the Cagliostro drawing. With the pink outline to give it that part 3 flare.

Blue Fiat is honestly a vibe, as iconic as the yellow Fiat is, I'm liking this. Y'know, Fiats are my dream car, and I had my heart deadset on finding a yellow one, but if I could only find one in this color, I would be okay with that. I'm representing a very obscure part of Lupin.

This shot was really cool and animated so well. The crane has so much detail and moves so well. Nowadays, the truck would have just been animated in 3D and traced over in 2D, but obviously, the technology didn't exist back then. Seeing stuff like this was hand-drawn is so impressive.
