![]() | Dragon Ball Z I'm currently watching the original version of this, but I eventually plan to also watch Jarttis's "Jartcut" version of this, which cuts down the show to less than two thirds its length just by removing filler, effectively increasing the pacing by more than 50%. For those who might think, "But doesn't Dragon Ball Z Kai already exist for that?", yes, it does, but Toei didn't do the greatest job at Kai. Watching Jartcut instead of Kai offers the following advantages: - Consistency. Kai's video quality is different from OG DB's, and it's actually worse, since they removed the grain which is important for details. Audio was also re-recorded both in Japanese and English, but 20 years had passed in-between. The Buu Saga also has a completely new soundtrack in Kai. (The only advantage Kai offers over Z is a more accurate English dub translation.) - The Buu Saga is only available in cropped 16:9 in Kai. - Due to some film material being lost, Kai has some redrawn scenes that look like 2009 instead of 1989, which can be quite distracting while watching. - Kai suffers from visual censorship. - Kai starts with a spoiler for those who have never seen this part of the show and also has massive spoilers in its openings. - The Buu Saga is also only available with English opening and ending in the international versions. As someone who prefers the original language, I hate that. | 7 | TV | 61

![]() | Hokuto no Ken While I haven't been able to watch it myself yet, I'd recommend the recut by Jarttis. Filler in FotNS is terrible to avoid, since some episodes are 18 minutes of filler and 2 minutes of canon content. The recut cuts the show to almost two thirds its length, just by removing filler, making it (in theory) a much more pleasurable and streamlined experience and increasing its pacing by almost 50%. | 6 | TV | 78

Airing
Currently watching from the beginning. I already know it's gonna get horrible later on, but consider this a test of my patience. Everything below is from older notes. One word: Pacing. Most episodes later on adapt less than one manga chapter, and there aren't many filler episodes, so you get canon arcs with MORE episodes than they adapt manga chapters. Math aside, that's just horribly slow. Most good shounen anime adapt at least double that pacing. Since the anime airs weekly and Toei refused to make filler arcs (which would've still been bad, but less so), they have to go this slow. It's hilarious that my favorite manga has one of my lowest anime scores. Edit: I eventually came back to modern One Piece for a few episodes, but was immediately turned away by how colorful and flashy every single attack had become. If you REALLY want to watch Toei One Piece, watch One Pace though. The project isn't perfect, but it's probably at least better. Also, for Fishman Island, watch One Piece Log. | - | TV | 61

![]() | Bleach Soul Society arc was very enjoyable, but after that, the pacing slowed down by roughly 33% (based on manga chapters to anime episodes ratio), and you could feel it. I'm not saying it's horrible, there are still cool fights and everything, but it sucks that they drag out for longer than they should. Some battles are fought over the span of multiple episodes, while it keeps switching between "This is happening here" and "This is happening there", and stuff gets repeated and repeated and repeated. There are also some filler arcs that-- while at least helping the canon material to retain a somewhat decent pacing --oftentimes break the flow of the story because they air in the middle of other arcs (and then they have to recap everything again once the canon plot resumes). Overall, the Bleach anime is enjoyable, probably even the best out of the Big Three, but its wasted potential due to 2000's anime's refusal to take breaks from airing is a letdown. Edit: I haven't checked it out myself yet, but consider the fan recut "Concentrated Bleach". | 7 | TV | 366

![]() | Dragon Ball While all the canon stuff is really good (R.I.P. Toriyama), all the filler added by Toei is really annoying, hence only a 7/10. Eventually, around episode 91 (Krillin vs. Chiaotzu), I had to downgrade it to 6/10. Again, the source material is great, but Toei really loves their padding and to make episodes really slow, and as someone who's coming from having read the manga, it's really painful to watch at times. Some of these fights should not take as long as they are. I will resort to watching Dragon Ball Recut in the future, but for the sake of rating this accordingly, I am watching the original first. Unfortunately, around episode 119, I had to downgrade it yet again. It felt like it took Goku and Tien forever to get to King Piccolo, all the while Yamcha was saying "I can't sit around doing nothing" at Kame House for the 6th time. If the rest of the arc and the Piccolo Jr. arc are better adapted, I might be able to bump it back up to a 6 again. | 6 | TV | 153
![]() | Dragon Ball Kai Instead of watching this again, I'd rather watch Jartis's "Jartcut" of Dragon Ball Z, since Dragon Ball Z Kai suffers from the following downsides: - Lack of consistency. Kai's video quality differs from OG DB's, and it's actually worse, since they removed the grain which is important for details, resulting in a blurry image. Audio was also re-recorded both in Japanese and English, but 20 years had passed in-between. Additionally, the Buu Saga has a different soundtrack in Kai. ![]() | Dragon Ball Super When I first watched this, it was epic, although some parts felt really stretched. After reading the manga, I noticed how flawed this adaptation really was. Some parts have three times the pacing they could have, and it's understandable why even Toriyama himself was dissatisfied with the quality at times. Lots of things are recycled, too. Considering that Toriyama helped work on the manga, it would have been much better to just wait for that to have a considerable amount of content, to then adapt. | 5 | TV | 131

![]() | Fairy Tail Pacing and animation are decent, but the anime kind of feels "dumbed down for kids". For example, after a few episodes, every episode starts with a glowy-eyed Natsu telling the viewers not to sit too close to their TV. I know Japan has strict laws to prevent epilepsy, but no other show I've seen has something like this, which makes me feel like the anime is purposefully aimed at elementary school kids. Not even buying the Blu-rays helps to get rid of this. There's also a little bit of trouble for me to take specific scenes seriously when they play remixes of "famous music themes" (e.g. the famous "wedding song", etc.) On another note, openings and endings are very misplaced. It seems they get replaced every episodes 13 or so, but since arcs often aren't resolved within 13 episodes, you'll get the next arc's opening and ending while still being in the middle of the ongoing one. It greatly spoils upcoming events. (Written as of episode 28.) After watching episode 79, I reduced my rating from 7 to 6. This episode was the culmination of an already prevalent issue, but taken to new heights: The same joke got played in repetition for what felt like 4 times. The entire first half of the episode was just the same jokes being repeated, characters were being extremely stupid for no reason other than "comedy", and you would wonder when there would finally be progress. | 6 | TV | 175
![]() | Fate/stay night At this point (written as of episode 15), only watching this because it's the foundation for the later adaptations by ufotable. To elaborate a little: Shirou's so-called "chivalry" is stupid at its best and sexist at its worst. "Women shouldn't fight!", "I don't want anybody to get hurt!" The cycle usually goes: People tell Shirou why his idealism is naïve, Shirou gets sulky, and later they change their mind because suddenly, they see "positive qualities" in Shirou and agree with him (or fall in love with him). It honestly sounds borderline toxic. Also, a murderous little girl gets invited to live with the sister of a boy she killed without ever telling the girl, because that's how you make her a better person. (Written as of episode 18.) The final few episodes saved this from becoming a 4/10. Also Shirou finally realized that women don't always want what he wants. | 5 | TV | 24

But, that's not due to the manga content not being good or anything, but because the anime team decided to make additions to it which aren't -- like revealing characters early. It takes away from the suspense of their actual first reveal. Also, the OVA is called episode 22.5, yet, after it, those aforementioned characters' appearances are being treated like non-revealed again, at least one of them. It just brings disarray into the continuity. So I say, just treat it like a non-required extra - which fits its status as an OVA anyway - and if you care for my opinion, skip it. | 6 | Special | 1

The first two VIZ Blu-ray volumes had an "acceptable" filler amount of 20%, but the remaining five have an absurd filler amount of 63%. You basically watch an episode, then skip two. Also, canon episodes either have content from the manga cut from them or filler material added. ![]() | Steins;Gate Movie: Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu This and the OVA are nice little stories of how Okabe and Kurisu's relationship develops again after the true ending, but nothing more than that. While I haven't played the game(s) yet, I'm pretty sure to remember this story isn't in the game, so it's practically just filler, and I have to say, while it's nice to see, it really isn't more than just that-- it doesn't really hook me or feels like it adds anything substantial to the franchise. I would've been just fine ending it on the anime's ending and leaving how their relationship develops again open to interpretation, no OVA or movie needed. | 6 | Movie | 1

![]() | Tales of Symphonia The Animation: Sylvarant-hen Apply this review for all three parts. I remember the animation and music as really good, but... it has the same problem most video game adaptations have. Too few episodes for too much content. I almost don't even feel like saying more. Many parts were being skipped over or changed, and it gives you so much less time to build up an emotional connection to the characters. | 6 | OVA | 4

![]() | Yu☆Gi☆Oh! Duel Monsters Not very fond of the changes they did to the story in order to have it start from volume 8 of the manga, even if I understand why. (Yes I'm aware of the first anime series.) It just makes... some things make less sense, or straight-up takes away the familiarity and bonding we would have otherwise already established with the characters. In my opinion, it just makes the manga more epic to read. That being said though, the anime is still very much enjoyable. Appendix as of episode 135: The pacing is alright. It could be a little bit faster, especially since certain plays (in the card game) take like what feels like 5 minutes, because first you need the characters to explain it to you like two times, and then the audience reacts to it, possibly also explaining it again or just expressing their "shock". Speaking of, the two non-duelist female characters, Anzu (Téa) und Shizuka (Serenity), yell "Yugi!" or "Onīchan!" (Big Bro) like after every move. Hell, Anzu was so whimpy in Duelist Kingdom. Why do you need to tear up over your friends having a friendly match in a tournament? It's not like they were having a death battle. Said duel brings me to the next point btw: anime original content. Luckily, most filler is self-contained, so you can just skip it (even though some people like the filler arcs), but other filler unfortunately mixes with the canon, so you have to watch it (unless you know which parts are filler and want to skip forward in the middle of an episode). I wish they stuck more to the manga, because it has a better pacing IMO, being more to the point. Overall, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters has its flaws, but it's still enjoyable. It's either a 6 or a 7 for me. For now, I'm rounding 6.5 up to a 7. | 7 | TV | 224

![]() | Naruto It was fine, but I really wanted to go through it faster, especially with all the repeating flashbacks. That's why I read the manga. Currently, a fan recut called "Naruto Resealed" is being worked on. There already exist a million fancuts of Naruto, but Resealed will probably end up being the best one in terms of quality. | 7 | TV | 49

![]() | Yu☆Gi☆Oh! Duel Monsters GX It's not bad, but a tad over the top for me. I'm more interested in reading the manga. Edit: I realized my description was a bit vague. To put it differently: Duels were happening for the stupidest reasons. Characters behaved either edgy for the sake of edginess, or were just outright despicable. Looking at you, Cronos/Crowler. I remember not having much of a problem with him as a child, but now, watching this as an adult, I feel like that guy would be in jail in real life. Either way, I guess it's supposed to be played for laughs or to make him dislikable, but the former is not working for me, and the latter is - but in wrong ways. | 5 | TV | 10
