39 | ![]() | Shingeki no Kyojin One of my favorite animes of all time, and my most favorite of this season, this proverbial titan towers 60M above its competetors with. The amazing story sets the stage early, and never lets up, and the interesting art style with heavy black outlines helps to accentuate the fear of the sityations and to make the characters stand out from their environment. But by far the best work they have done on this series has to be on the Titans. They look human, but have a very primitive style of walking, and appear to be painted with some kind of watercolor and/or fatter than normal humans. That in combination with their creepy always-smiling faces, as well as their teeth, create a vegetative enemy, human only in looks, that is able to replicate the despair, all while seeming that "something like this may be entirely possible", pulling you in and feeling the weight of these massive characters with the rest of the cast. The director of Guilty Crown was actually an asset to this show, and many of the 3D Maneuver Gear movements harken back to Guilty Crown. The animations are fluid and crisp and you wonder how these people are able to fly so fast through cities like that. The charcters are also great, with a wide variety of people who each have an unexpected trait that help them escape the world of stale tropes. From Armin, who would be stereotypically the annoying protagonist who cant pull the trigger, discovers that he is actually a great strategist. Eren's fight to avenge his mother becomes titanic when he discovers he can morph into a titan. To even Jean, whose goal was to land a cushy position beyond Wall Sina and relax for the rest of his days, but finds himself struggling with his actual ability to lead his troops against odds he never again thought he would have to face. Of particular note in my book is Mikasa who is probably my favorite character in the show. A ruthless badass who doesnt play the "Dere" like so many other characters, it is a joy watching her completely show up the elite soldiers by killing hundreds of titans, then seeing her crazed and deluded obsession with Eren a couple of shots later. "If I fight for him, then he will be so happy I will never leave his side". As one of the strongsuits of this show, I am excited to see how Eren fits in with the Survey Corps. Levi, Hanji and the others are not easy to read or predict, and you will never know what their actions will be. I am greatly looking forward to the future of this show which has been nothing short of a masterpiece thus far. | 4 | TV | 18

44 | ![]() | Tenkuu no Escaflowne A very well-done piece of work, from the music, to the world, and many other things. I especially enjoyed the mechs, particularly escaflowne, simply because of the fact that its presence in battle was appropriate, and never strayed to far to the unbelievable or deus ex machina you see in other mech animes. Van fails, he gets injured, he falls down, and it is all a part of the plan. Seeing the mortality of this character, while sometimes annoying, adds an appropriate weight to the series and helps to establish the underlying theme of despair that is present through these episodes. I would also like to draw attention to the way Hitomi is protrayed. When she refused to read any more fortunes, I quietly chastised her for hypocrisy, she who wanted to save her friends, but was unwilling to give them the information or means to do so. In the next scene I changed my mind. For someoe who just lived and wanted a normal life, to be suddenly just a tool to be used, and to see such horrible visions when being usedhas made me sympathize with the plight of an otherwise irrational characterization like no anime has ever made me do before. Character development is subtle, but it is there, and everything has a reason for happening, such as the duke, Allen, Chid, Millerna, Van, and Hitomi. It is this develoopment that has proven to me how far this show has come so far and how far ti is willing to go in the future, | 8 | TV | 16

54 | ![]() | 07-Ghost 07-Ghost was by no means a good anime, but it also was not that bad of a show either. Animation was stiff, meaning that they not only cut corners but did a pretty good job covering it up. During many of the fight scenes, you never really see fluid animation and the screen turns black whenever a hit succeeds. Character faces are stone-locked and their expressions are in permanent pretty-boy mode. This anime was exactly what I expected it to be. Ayanami was exactly how I expected as well. | 7 | TV | 25

89 | ![]() | Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan 2 One of teh worst sequels in a while. took away all the fun and left only the fanservice. gone are the classmates, gone are the super awkward situations with other classmates, and gone is the character development up to that point. its as if they gave the series to a perverted fanboy on the bus and said to him "you have a clean slate, make us a sequel". he chose to add dokuro's sister and increase the boobage on all accounts, as well as other things. the reactions were basically all in response to sexual situations, and not just awkward stuff how it should be. not bad if you are looking for Borderline, but compared to the original series, this is lackluster at best. | 5 | OVA | 2
90 | ![]() | Bounen no Xamdou This show is so much like Eureka 7 it hurts. From the plucky protag whisked away from his peaceful home and family by a ragtag group of heroes who are more than what they appear, to those who hold the key to the world, right down to the mid-series spiritual journey both Renton and Akiyuki take, to even the animation studios. The characters are all interesting enough, and their development matches what we've seen in Eureka 7. Akiyuki didnt fit the mold of the bland protagonist, while Haru and Furuichi's split was done very well. I especially enjoyed many of the Sentan Islanders, with particular mention to Akiyuki's parents, as well as to the captain. Their development, while subtle, was, in my opinion, some of the best of the series. The Commander and his assistant, while troubled, often provided some interesting dialogue about what is right and wrong and who should be the judge The crew was alright, but tried too hard to follow in Eureka 7's shadow, expecting you to love the members without taking adequate time to build a strong relationship with them. Nakiami was a carbon copy of a Ghibli protagonist, and I could never really get a read on her character for the entire show (why was she so likeable?) While it wasnt perfect, I applaud the studio for handling such a large ensemble cast as well as they did. Though the plot suffered and I was admittedly lost at several points, dont come into this show for the story or the action. Stay for the characters and you may think it is okay. I loved the juxtaposition of these characters to their situations and how they were affected by it, though it was as if they handled fantasy situations with the same mindset as they would a normal war. Granted, one could make the argument that this is the only war they know, but it was still something that felt off. It was precisely because of the characters and their struggles that key elements of the plot felt off to me. While the show took amazing effort to build and shape its characters, it was as if the plot was rushed and took a backseat to the character development. People creating and destroying relationships amidst psycho babble about Hirukos and Humanforms, as well as a lack of exposition into key plot elements and the reasons for the war created 2 distinct, but altogether separate animals that the series did not have enough time to explore. The plot train leaves without the viewer, and doesnt stop to wait up. You definitely need to rewatch this show to really understand what's going on, though Im not sure if Im ready for that in a while. | 8 | ONA | 26

97 | ![]() | Clannad: After Story No one wanted to like this show more than me. After having this recommended to me freshman year of college, it sat on my list for 4 years before I finally decided to tackle it. Every review raved about how it was emotional, thought-provoking, and even life-changing. I was hoping to watch this show after I had seen other less savory offerings. It is just so painful to say just how wrong I was. For a rom-com, you definitely could do worse. Characters build upon themselves and everyone matters in some way, shape, or form. Stories in the beginning are supposed to matter in the end. It all comes together. The only problem is that it takes so long to do so. You have to wade through countless stories without a single bearing in order to reach some conclusion. In the original Clannad, there was a story about a starfish girl that lasted around 10-12 episodes. When she finally makes her return, no one remembers her and no one really cares. It just doesn't make sense as it should. Same with many of the other stories. They were there, but without meaning. Even once you begin after story, you still get these stories, as if you are wading through a pile of shit to reach the end. And did the payoff suck! Not that it was bad, but just that I got my hopes up it would be something better. This would have been an amazing end to a 13 or 26 episode series, and the writers of Clannad could definitely trimmed down the material. That said, it was cryptic and came out of left field. We did learn from it though. A while back I played a game called Astro Boy Omega Factor and I am reminded of it whenever I think of this anime. Omega factor had the same exact type of ending and when I played it in 2003 I was completely floored. I have nothing but fond memories of that game, and I think I look back on it the same way many people look back on Clannad. Everyone has to experience that ending, no matter what medium, and for many, its what brought them into anime. I can respect that. In summary, The biggest mistake I made was expecting to be blown away. And while it wasn't the worst, I won't be making that mistake again. | 8 | TV | 24

102 | ![]() | Code Geass: Boukoku no Akito 1 - Yokuryuu wa Maiorita An overall solid show with lots of amazing views of the cities of the EU! But unfortunately, it reminds me alot more of Mirror's Edge and Viper's Creed than it does of Code Geass. I am not sure exactly what the directors were aiming for, as the heavy explanation of the 2 main series is replaced by a plethora of ambiguous matters. though the character designs are similar to what was presented in R1 and R2, they didn't really have anything that interesting about them. So theres some japanese exile guy who likes to fight and theres some girl who likes him and doesnt want him to be called "eleven". then there is some chinese guy who has Geass. Show doesnt have the natural flow that makes Code Geass Code Geass. this is quite simply, a normal show set in geass's world with almost no connection drawn to it besides some nightmares that vaguely resemble sutherlands and Suzaku on a train. I will note, however, that i think Akito has potential as a character. This guy is not some happy-go=lucky refugee who just sits there and takes it. at the Celebration Party, he assessed the situation, and made the noble fear him instead of running blindly in. the face that he does not act like any old anime character in every show ever is enough to earn my respect, and i will be staying around to see exactly where this goes. | 7 | Movie | 1
103 | ![]() | Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch A very interesting show that has a lot of different characters, and tons of rewatch value, but what made it so was the last 3 or so episodes. I have very high hopes for the second half of the series, and hope that it turns out to be much better than the first. It is possible to tell the difference between the main characters and side characters, and the normal soldiers/fighters because the main characters look completely outlandish at times in everything from dress to demeanor to everything in between, and you can always count on everyone being fleshed out in some way or another. | 9 | TV | 25
104 | ![]() | Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch - Nunnally in Wonderland | 7 | OVA | 1
105 | ![]() | Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2 I do think a little bit of criticism should be levied at the Knights of Round, a steaming cesspool of anime tropes and overused character types. It made me quite happy when Suzaku completely tore most of them to shreds. But what makes the series great is how little of the time was devoted to these washed-out people. Because in my opinion, what makes an action anime great is for the main characters to be powerful, to shoot when the chance presents itself. for an annoying and grating character like Clovis or the Knight of 10 to die within a single episode of being introduced (and in glorious fashion at that), should be a model all anime take after. I am not sure what Goro was thinking when he directed this, but if this is the shit they release each year, I am really starting to fear Ghibli's future. I have always been a fan of the ghibli art style, realistic characters, and beautiful scenery, towns, and other things. But this movie is atrocious. normal looking guy dates normal looking girl, then there is "incest" and some angst, and she raises flags everyday becuase she is sad, and then their clubhouse is saved, and at the climax, they talk to some guy who was friends with her dad. 139 | ![]() | Gantz This show looked like it had alot of promise, and I came in with high expectations. It, however, shat on them by giving us a story with no development, card board cut outs of the burly gang members, ineffectual leads, weak females and lots and lots of talking. This conversation was used to hide the low budget of this show, whose animations are stiff all across the board. There is no 26-episode anime I have ever found that has managed to drag an arc out for as long as this show has | 5 | TV | 13
140 | ![]() | Gantz 2nd Stage I had high hopes coming into Gantz and those hopes were repetetively smashed into the ground. This is one of the worst mainstream shows I have ever seen, and deservedly so. The stiff animations and lousy 3d backgrounds return from the 1st season, but with an all new air of stupidity. Reviews of the manga state that the artist is "over the top" and "crazy" in his portrayal of certain characters and situations. Yet I see nothing of that in the animated product. Sure characters have sex, and die in the most inappropriate ways, but it hardly feels either lewd or crazy. It moreso feels like the animators were told "Hey, this manga has x and y in it. So put x and y into the main show in spots a and b". There is no following action, and the plot of both seasons could be summed up in a couple of sentences. "Two kids die trying to help a homeless man, and are given a second chance at life by playing a survival game. They are tasked with killing aliens. Watch as bad animation, thin plot, and lackluster character development become the new way to watch anime". One particular scene stood out to me, from episode 15 or 16. The characters explain they will shoot the creature with an x-ray gun. Someone then asks what an x ray gun is. Characters then begin to ask if it can shoot the creatures down. A character then answers that it is used to see if a creature is alive. It pissed me off. All of that could have taken place in one singular second, yet they blatantly dragged it out to the point of stupidity. You would figure that someone old enough to watch a show about killing, sex and violence would know what an xray gun is... guess not. | 4 | TV | 13

160 | ![]() | High School DxD Anime fans should take note: This show is one of the most distinctly self-aware anime I have seen in recent memory. It knows exactly what it is and is not trying to be more than the sum of its parts. From a guy who doesn't freak out and turn the other way when he sees boobs, to a main cast that is not your normal smack-the-guy-because-he-saw-me-naked, this show stands out from average, and more popular shows in a refreshing and novel way. Fluid animation, devotion to fan service, and characters you won't find in any other harem anime allow this show to move ahead of its run-of-the-mill season-by-season competitors to become something truly distinguishable in the market. Common fans may have gripes with this show, but they should understand what they are getting into going in. Don't expect the next Clannad, Gurren Lagann, Fullmetal Alchemist, or Code Geass. Just turn off your brain, dive in, and have a blast! | 9 | TV | 12

192 | ![]() | Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita a great show that definitely picked up considerably during the second half. Watashi is an amazing character, cynical to a fault and a dyed in the wood realist. She is the perfect fit for the show, in the way that she talks to the fairies, and expresses, in a similar manner, her distaste for the current state of society. What i find hilarious is how far off the cliche norm her character is. emotional moments are few and far between, and this show doesnt layer on the fluff. the fairies describe the current state of humanity so well its scary, and getting a glimpse into Watashi's thoughts is also pretty damn amazing as well. that girl is smart, resourceful, and always acting in her own best interest. We really need more characters like this. | 8 | TV | 12

253 | ![]() | Nijuu Mensou no Musume SPOILERS!!!!: Overall a great series that squandered the potential of the first six episodes to turn it into a mundane show, but the revelation itself was one of the best ive seen ever. I really would have loved seeing an anime about a comeraderie of thieves traveling the world together stealing the most impressive jewelry. Wouldnt have minded if 20 faces stayed a mystery either. | 9 | TV | 22

274 | ![]() | Ozma Not a bad show at all. tis just simply, well, average. Doesnt have any bit of Leiji Matsumoto in it besides the character designs. I was also taken aback by the names of the characters, which, in my opinion did not fit my perceptions of them. i mean, gido, come on! this guy is a badass commando and you name him gido? HE should have been the one named Theseus. would have fit much better in my opinion! Was gonna recommend this as a comedy anime. Then I discovered everyone was being completely serious :P. Angsty well-dressed badly-named characters fighting each other, and oh, who could forget the awesome nod to Mars of Destruction with the "humans are not the true beings of earth". Guess there was a reason why this never saw the light of day. | 6 | TV | 6
