Asayake wa Koganeiro: The Idolm@ster
Too sappy and they have to tease stuff like Kotomi's reason for disappearing for 1/3 of the runtime as if it'll be a shocking reveal when it's literally something basic you could already assume.

Devilman
It must've been crazy reading this in the 70s with some of that art and the way the story's told and the scale it takes on, but the politics feel like 14 year old that just discovered atheism. Just make sure you read the version on mangadex and not the "classic collection" that removes and reorders chapters and inserts shin devilman halfway through.

Dragon Ball
I love the way the action is choreographed, it's so clean and easily readable. Red Ribbon Army saga is really fun because the story never gets the chance to do something like that again later on, it's unique. It's been 9 years since I watched the anime but apparently there's a lot of filler inserted in between canon stuff to extend it, the biggest difference is General Blue is never attracted to that boy from Dr. Slump, they literally made him a pedophile in the anime filler only lmao. So the manga's possibly superior to the anime, it's a lot less of a time investment for me (but I don't remember ever really having a problem with the pacing in the anime pre-Z, and I never even watched the original Z, only Kai instead). The King Piccolo saga is a little weaker, it just abruptly starts right after a tournament and then Goku has to get an asspull powerup and then just as abruptly King Piccolo is defeated without it really having any time to affect the world, but this isn't that kind of manga with worldbuilding and politics and whatever. I still like how the stakes ramped up though, Roshi was pretty badass standing up to Piccolo alone to try that move even if it failed. Tournament arcs are fun too, don't get me wrong I like them but the story starts to revolve a lot around them at a point. King Piccolo starts immediately after the 2nd tournament arc, after all that's done there's a 3 year timeskip and then ANOTHER tournament arc. Piccolo Jr. fight is better than the King Piccolo fight though. ...And at the halfway point of reading the manga they announce that Akira Toriyama passed away, R.I.P. Anything I write after here is after that happened. The Saiyan saga breaks up the tournament arc repetition but it starts the trend of a thing I'm not too big a fan of, where characters have to hold out against a powerful enemy as long as they can before Goku can show up. It's cool at least it ramps up the stakes and several characters die, and then directly leads into Namek with the characters having a faint hope of fixing things. I wonder if anyone ever mapped out all the characters' movements during the Namek saga, there's a lot of shenanigans with characters flying every which way, tracking chi either through being able to sense it or having to rely on a scouter, putting thought into either suppressing their own chi if they know how or unleashing it to fly faster. Now having finished the manga I don't have much more to say other than I continued to enjoy the cell and buu sagas to the very end. Buu saga has a sudden darker shift, with the Videl beatdown, gore of random humans, Vegeta killing at least 200 people, the last of humanity going extinct in a single attack, and then all that's juxtaposed with a lot more humor than was present for a while that actually had me laughing out loud. A lot of the series is really improved by reading it, it was hard for me to be interested in the anime at that point since some things really don't need to be portrayed longer than what a single manga panel shows.

Jujutsu Kaisen
Caught up on 2/15/24. It's probably kinda shallow, I don't hate any characters at least, but it's very "hype" and I love these types of fights, very technical with barrier rules and bullshit powers (that's a complement in my head at least). The art is messy but I like how the action is choreographed and can tell the anime is going to go fucking crazy with it when they do the culling game and Maki vs the Zen'in clan and beyond. Has some ideas I find at least a bit interesting, Gojo is like Superman not only in power but his affect on politics, the villains have to come up with some Lex Luthor-esque plan to seal him. Something about Sukuna is just done right, nothing about him makes me feel "ow the edge", he's very analytical, he's kind of like Thanos (idk if making capeshit comparisons is good for convincing people tho). I also like this type of setting in general, modern day in our world but fighting happens unknown to society (until a city is wiped off the map), kinda like JoJo how stands are a self-keeping secret. It also scratches that itch I have for anime with levels of destruction actually comparable to DBZ (or Man of Steel), a lot of stuff gets compared to DBZ like YYH, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece but none of those have characters that can casually destroy a city or even the moon and actually do it (since it's not really the point of those works). All the fights in the culling game are cool and characters introduced don't feel unnecessary. There's even a Bobobo fight in here and it works. But it's just a lot of ideas, it doesn't reach something like HxH in characters or themes despite being a big influence, at least even Naruto tried to have themes about war and nuclear weapons and talk no jutsu. I guess one of the more interesting plots is the flashback arc with Geto but he was already killed off in Vol. 0 before the series even began, Kenjaku's just a different guy entirely and I don't think the series is going to be able to pull off a "freeing humanity from cursed energy" ending in its current direction either. One thing I do find dumb is cursed techniques are entirely innate, as in only genetically inherited? But some characters just happen to awaken to a CT that strongly ties to their profession like a lawyer or comedian. Other CTs seem hard to imagine they would have been passed down for a thousand years like the 24fps one when it's so strongly tied to a modern invention like animation.

Love Live!
There's whole chapters of the characters coming up with plans for how they're going to get their idol group more popular or whatever in such a mind numbing way, like every character has to comment on something that might be a drawback, it's way too in-depth but it's not particularly smart or realistic about it, they could've just cut to them immediately doing those plans while briefly explaining what they settled on to speed up the plot, not enough yuri or character moments either even though some of that is there. Also has weird differences from the anime like Eli grew up in Japan instead of Russia so she was also childhood friends with Honoka, Umi, and Kotori, and she doesn't meet Nozomi for the first time until after the start of the story (and when she does she's the one immediately groping Nozomi's breasts instead). Also after releasing the 5th volume they released one last chapter before going on hiatus to quickly and kinda lazily have the plot say "I guess we brought our school enough attention in our battle with A-RISE to save it from shutting down" even though they never even got to qualifying for the Love Live. Basically just skip this and read the School Idol Diary manga instead. This does have Umi showering tho.

Love Live! School Idol Diary
Publishing
(Manga) Really good characterization and interactions that were missing from the show, I love every character after this. Since it's adapted from light novels that are written like the characters' diaries, there's a lot of introspective narration here and it lets you know how each character thinks in a way the anime could never show. There's also more character backstory and plotlines that just don't exist in the anime at all, like that Umi relates to Maki because they're both expected to inherit their parents' businesses (Umi's parents own a dojo, Maki's own a hospital) and Umi is able to convince Maki's father to let Maki continue being an idol. It's cool stuff like that that pairs characters together in ways other than the main pairs and makes for good development and drama (also that story gets continued later in another manga, SID special edition). Other stuff differs from the show too, like the way that the other girls find out about Nico's siblings happens differently and Nico had another reason for hiding it (she doesn't like that her house looks poor, also Nico's brother doesn't exist in this continuity). There's more Nico backstory in the light novel that's even more sad but didn't get adapted here. Nozomi is really sweet here too and she never does the washi washi thing, I actually wish that hadn't been a thing in the show now. I still come back to this and the SID second season manga to reread random chapters, I like it that much. It's just kinda dumb that the Love Live media I love most is a manga, which as you know doesn't contain voice acting or music. I don't think any more chapters are getting released but MAL messes it up if I try to mark this as complete.

Slightly more chibi art style change from the previous manga but it's great too. I think this isn't adapted from light novels at this point but it's still written by the same author so also good. Last volume is a really cool sendoff.

Love Live! Sunshine!!
Publishing
Short so the story doesn't get very far and there's funny differences like Chika being closer to Kanan than You and going to her first with the idea of being an idol that would probably imply the whole secret backstory where Kanan quit being an idol didn't happen. Also Ruby being afraid of boys probably implies she would confront that fear (males showing up) if this had published long enough lol (good thing that didn't make it into the anime because that's already a big trait of Yukiho from idolmaster). I felt like this might've had a better initial setup if it actually had gone anywhere. The way that Chika and Riko meet is really funny, especially later when they realize they're in the same grade.

Love Live! Sunshine!!: School Idol Diary
Publishing
First two chapters retell the exact same events with even the exact same dialogue from the other Sunshine manga and the chapters after that are mostly too much introspection from other characters' perspectives so there's no actual stories where characters do anything and interact with each other and have cute yuri moments.

Good companion piece to the anime, shows events from the anime but from different characters' perspectives, and other original stories. Hibiki is kind of gay for Takane here. Even the girl that called Yayoi useless gets to apologize to her.

The iDOLM@STER 2 Nemuri Hime
Not a fan of the artstyle or the way it tells Chihaya's story, this doesn't really follow the game's story to the end from what I can tell. How autistic she is when talking about classical music is funny at least. Producer here literally looks like Shinji Ikari so I can't take it seriously though. There's a part where the Producer is suddenly like "You girls are on your own during this training camp, good luck" and then the girls throw a tiny concert for some restaurant struggling with business that they're somehow able to pull a huge crowd for the same day they start handing out flyers for it, with like no effort or chance of failure at all, it's really stupid.

The iDOLM@STER 2: The World Is All One!!
The producer is the most prominent main character which might be annoying if you aren't interested in him and were only interested in the girls instead. It's kind of boring, it's really in-depth on the producing side of things. Characters have long conversations so chapters feel really slow to read even though they're 24 pages on average. It does go all in on telling a really complete story though, others may enjoy it more than I did.
