The 23rd and final episode of the new television anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura (Those Obnoxious Aliens) manga announced on Friday a second season, revealing a visual (pictured). The new anime season is set to premiere in 2024.

Produced by David Production, the new television anime adaptation began airing in Fall 2022. HIDIVE simulcast the anime worldwide, excluding Central America, South America, and Asia.

Takahashi serialized the sci-fi romantic comedy manga in Weekly Shounen Sunday from 1978 to 1987 and compiled into 35 volumes. Shogakukan later reprinted the series in 15 wide-ban volumes in 1989–1990, 18 bunkoban volumes in 1998–1999, and 35 shinsoban volumes in 2006–2008. Urusei Yatsura has sold a cumulative 35 million copies of its compiled volumes.

Studio Pierrot and Studio Deen co-produced the original television anime that aired in 195 episodes from October 1981 to March 1986. The manga also inspired four side story movies between 1983 and 1986, followed by two sequel movies in 1988 and 1991. An 11-episode original video anime ran from 1985 to 1991.

VIZ Media licensed the manga in English in 1989 and released seven comic book issues before canceling publication the following year due to poor sales. The publisher reintroduced the manga in its Animerica magazine in 1994 and shipped eight volumes between 1995 and 1999—roughly covering 11 tankoban volumes—and put the series on hiatus in 1998.

VIZ Media relicensed the manga in July 2018 and began releasing 2-in-1 omnibus volumes in February 2019. The 17th volume went on sale on February 28. The manga has also been published in multiple foreign languages, including Spanish, Italian, French, and Chinese.

Urusei Yatsura won the 26th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shounen and Shoujo categories in 1980.

Synopsis
When aliens known as the Oni threaten to invade the Earth, they promise to leave under one condition—a randomly-chosen human must win a one-on-one game of tag against Lum, the beautiful daughter of the Oni leader. The "lucky" person selected happens to be the lustful and unlucky high schooler Ataru Moroboshi. Given 10 days to attempt to grab Lum's horns, Ataru realizes how impossible the challenge is as he is faced with Lum's extraterrestrial powers.

Motivated by a promise of marriage from his childhood friend Shinobu Miyake, Ataru manages to catch Lum off guard. He mistakenly grabs hold of her bikini top first, but he eventually achieves his true goal. Although the game is over, Lum misunderstands that she is the one whom Ataru wants to marry, and she decides to move in with him. The poor student constantly tries to shake off the clingy Lum while doing his best to reconcile with his desired fiancée. After Ataru's heroic feat results in such a disastrous outcome, it is questionable whether luck will ever be on his side. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
