I love One Piece. I really do. The cast is incredibly strong. Their arcs are all incredibly touching and they have a fun chemistry in their crew. All of the side characters, villains, everything - they're all so interesting. Evil and good are questioned as technically, the main characters are "bad" guys in title and position but morally they are very good, while the Marines, "good guys", can be very much the villain. The world is vast and colourful and very muchso built and so INTERESTING. Oda's lush detail built such places like Skypiea and Water 7 to be so amazing and wonderful and you just want to be there. You bond with the characters and truly care about them. I know I was an emotional wreck all through the Water 7 arc (my personal favorite) what with Robin, Usopp, Merry... I think what One Piece has done most for me is help me accept death. After the Marineford arc when Luffy asks "Is he really gone?" I broke down in tears and sat in a bathtub for an hour, just crying, because at that moment, it suddenly hit me that my grandfather who passed away earlier that month and my friend that passed away a year prior - they were really gone. I had gone to funeral services, I had gone to empty homes, but it wasn't until that moment when I read that page of One Piece did it hit me that those people I loved were truly gone and I would never see them again. And it helped me accept it and become okay with it and just deal with it (since at that point I had tumbled down a steep hill of detesting myself for feeling NOTHING for over a year) And it's amazing a series can make me feel something so important and profound and life-changing. And One Piece is amazing for that. However, everything One Piece was starts to fade at the timeskip. Of course, this is my personal opinion, but I felt that Fishman Island and Punk Hazard were such weak arcs. Fishman Island especially, where I don't even remember what the main villain did... you just didn't CARE. Shirahoshi was there, sure, and she cried and was cute, and Sanji was a lech (oh, how Sanji has fallen) and they partied? Alright. Also Jinbei was there I think. Punk Hazard improved just by having Trafalgar Law there and creating the alliance with the Strawhats. However, it did have some really gross scenes of Sanji continuing to be a lech (and nobody taking it seriously since it's haha ~funny~) and just.... God I don't know. I think worst of all is where Oda's art has gone. By no means is it bad, but it has shifted into something where everybody looks the same or very similar. Oda is very capable of making diverse looking characters (since personality is of little issue) if Amazon Lily or, heck, just think of all the male characters throughout the series! However, instead, Robin, who used to have such outstanding features, it now Nami's twin except with a line on her nose to make a point that it's ~different~. Tashigi now looks the same. They all look the same. There is like, no diversity. This with the not so interesting arcs makes it difficult to stomach nowadays since it was once just.... so good. |
