| ![]() | Akumetsu Superhero story set in post WW2 Japan, where the villains are all corrupt politicians. Exposition about the economic situation and how that ties into the wavering moral compass of the characters can drag on, but Akumetsu's 'power' is unique and interesting and makes for a great action-fueled story. | 8 | 162 | 18 | Low
| ![]() | Chaosic Rune It started out so well! The premise involves a series of 'open-world' duels with pseudo-Pokemon mixed with the initial tension of SAO. If your summoned creature took damage, your body would too. This made for some fantastically gory opening scenes. Then, after the initial arc (JUST like SAO) the plot forgot where it was even trying to go and the writer just started throwing new dangers at the protagonists every 5 seconds. I couldn't even care about any of it by the end. What a waste of a cool premise. | 5 | 71 | 8 | Low
| ![]() | Deadman Wonderland This series tries to have its cookie and eat it too by attempting to be both edgy and fun. The shallow plot is made up for in part with a ridiculous cast. Shiro is insane. | 7 | 58 | 13 | Low
| ![]() | Elfen Lied The series lures you in with excessive gore, nudity and fetish fuel but somewhere along the way I found myself reading it for the story and somehow feeling emotionally connected to the characters. I don't know quite where the turning point was but eventually I found myself reading a thoroughly engaging sci-fi plot that subtly engaged with themes such as the morality of evolution and gun control. Then again this was my first manga series, so I'm looking at this through a lens of nostalgia. | 9 | 113 | 12 | Low
| ![]() | Fragtime A lesbian learns that she has the power to stop time - except not for the one girl she's fallen in love with. Hilarity and drama ensues. | 8 | 18 | 2 | Low
| ![]() | Girl Friends The characters in this series are so realistic in their actions that it hurts. The artwork is done to a very high standard. The plot carefully invokes misunderstandings in a believable fashion. This is what yuri manga is capable of being. | 10 | 35 | 5 | Low
| ![]() | Nononono Lynn learns to restrain himself a little, and a solid story about ski jumping emerges. Don't bother with it unless you have a high tolerance for scenes intended to shock the viewer. This one will hit harder than Elfen Lied for some by virtue of having comparatively realistic characters and setting. | 9 | 142 | 13 | Low
| ![]() | Serial Experiments Lain: The Nightmare of Fabrication This seems to take place after the game and before the t.v. series. As it is short, it focuses heavily on one particular aspect of psychology: consciousness as the liminality of memory and perception. Beautifully drawn and thought provoking. If the anime was a meal at a fancy restaurant, this is the coffee and cake. | 10 | 1 | - | Low
