Part of Scotland Loves Anime. I watched fourteen of them at the festival, and intend to watch the rest on my own time. To jot down few comments:
(1) 龍の歯医者
Liked the form but not the content. I loved the drawings and how the work delivered the message. How I felt about the message itself -- that we need to accept our fate -- not so sure. One of the works which clearly displayed militarism of Japan.
(2) Me! Me! Me!
Love this work. Although the director said he did not intend anything particular, I think he managed to put together something that works well. The misogynic nature of Japanese animation culture in one short music video. It's really a revenge. And at one point, the male protagonist seems to forget what it is that he loves and wants to protect -- leading to his ultimate death. Loved the color very much.
(3) Carnage
I thought this was the worst work among the ones shown. I liked the drawings, but there was nothing original nor great. It was just another context-less western, revenge story in Japanese anime. Not impressive at all.
(4) until You come to me
Little bit of EVA. I have no idea why this is here. But it was a good piece of EVA.
(5)そこからの明日
いやされた。。Loved the message, loved the pastel-toned drawings. Something I would like to watch a number of times. Nothing atypical, but definitely hopeful.今日も頑張ります！I really hope this is what fictional work will be like for many people - an opportunity to see the mysterious, magical world, and earn the power to live on.
(6) ヤマデロイド
何これ。意味わかんない。でも面白かった。吉崎さんが言ったとおり、日本ぽっくって、面白い作品。音楽よかったな。Sort of reminded me of Gakupo's Dancing Samurai.
(7) Power Plant No. 33
Good. Typical apocalyptic sci-fi setting but with some turn. Return to nature?
(8) evangelion: another impact (confidential)
Similar comment to "until You come to me". I liked hearing "ダメです！” Why must you break down all the time, EVA?
(9)Kanón
My favorite among all the works, I think. Really dealt with what it means to be a creator. There was an odd EVA reference, which I thought worked well somehow, since fans were pretty outraged about the way EVA was put together. I loved the "はい" at the end. 辛くても、作るのをやめません。書くのをやめません。
(10) SEX and VIOLENCE with MACHSPEED
Funny. Odd. Somewhat lewd. I loved the message it sent -- 결국 취좆들은 다 죽여버리겠다는거였다.
(11) I can Friday by day
Another great work. Loved the drawings and imagination. Also really enjoyed how two different worlds crossed into one -- the world of everyday first-love type of story and the military-based expeditionary tale. Very impressive.
(12) ハンマーヘッド
Another good work. Liked the message -- that there is really no reason why we do certain things. We simply carry on what we have to do. But similar to 龍の歯医者、I wasn't sure how I felt about this oddly totalitarian thought.
(13) コント ころしや 1989
Absolutely hilarious. I was amazed at the way it worked among non-Japanese speaking audience, since there were some puns. Nevertheless, it was great. Now that I watch it again, I see how there are a lot of repeating identical objects within the anime.
(14) ブブとブブリーナ
Cute story and drawings. Reminded me a lot of Moomin. I loved the anime but thought it worked better as an episode in a series of work than a short anime on its own. Nevertheless, it was heartwarming ending to the expo.
