If you don't mind the sort of melodrama that Your Lie In April tends to dip into at times, then you should get a good kick out of something like Kids on the Slope. It's about a group of high schoolers living in the 1960's who get caught up in the musical world of jazz. I'm no music expert like yourself, but you could tell there's definitely a genuine love there for the music and instruments they're utilizing.

Another title worth giving a watch is Nana. While it doesn't bother making the music a focal point, it still follows a group of up-and-coming musicians going through the struggle of making it on the big stage. Primarily it's about the relationships and ties they have with others, and in that sense, it's one of the more maturely handled romance/drama stories in the medium. Given your age, I'm sure you'll have an appreciation for its more open depiction of co-dependence and all of the drama that comes with forming relationships. It doesn't just pull the "would or wouldn't they" formula, it actually goes through several relationships, each of which deepening the web that the characters involved are caught up in. Nana has been in my top 10 for years now, if that serves as any kind of endorsement for you. Something I think your wife might fall in love with as well.

And lastly Hibike! Euphonium. Another high school anime that follows a group of musicians, this time in a band. It's a show that carries the kind of fidelity expected from anyone trying to capture that feeling and environment that comes with being in a school band. Like Your Lie in April, the musicians and their playing is pivotal to the story at hand, so with that in mind, it's another show you'll more than likely have an appreciation for. It also boasts anatomically correct body proportions (minus the usual anime eyes) and was sponsored by Yamaha, so all the instruments used are based on real models.

Waw, 20th anniversary, congrats man, not many people could boast that these days. It also takes some real cojones to leave something like that behind. I'm glad you still kept that passion to play, though. Haha I could only imagine how strange it was when those titles were like watching through the looking glass. That's what makes anime so amazing, the ability to be relatable, despite how abstract it could get. How long have you and your wife been watching anime?

Black Heaven is like anime's comical take on American Beauty, something that on paper should have come off as a hokey mess, but in the right hands turned out to be a real earnest endeavor. I'm in no way approaching 50s yet and I could still relate to the story, which is a testament to just how good the anime really is. I'm glad I could provide insight for you through my review, after all, giving the show more exposure, as well as properly guiding those who've seen it was the intent. And if I was able to do that for you, then that's mission accomplished in my book.

No actually, the most I've ever done pertaining to writing would be an AP writing course in high school but I've never taken any additional education in writing. What you read is a result of constantly retooling my craft, experimenting with different styles of writing, and taking cues from others I find interesting. In the same way I'm sure you've honed your skills as a musician, I've honed the skills of my writing by constantly trying to refurbish it, a sort of effort carried over from my ability to draw and do other arts and craft things. It's just applied to a different kind of "art" in a sense.

A fan of Black Heaven, well that's something you don't get often. I'm glad you liked the review, I felt like the show needed more exposure, far too many people overlook that gem.

Try reading Holyland, It's a really good manga but it cover some very deep topics like sucide so trigger warning; but other than that it's a great action manga!
