Yes! Absolutely, Clannad is love!

KingOfPneumos May 10, 6:55 AM
That's the thing - that was my very first introduction to anime/Japanese culture, despite being made entirely by Westerners. I think about how different my life would be without running into it way back then, and I do think it's one of those big 'crossroads' moments in life, as silly as that might sound.

It's interesting to see how fast generational differences are emerging these days compared to even a decade or so ago - you mention the Golden Age of the Internet of around 2020, and for me personally that Golden Age is around 2012-2015, so I suppose most of it is just what we grew up through adolescence with. :) The shocking rate of technological and cultural change is insane, in retrospect. I wonder how those sorts of things will be in just a few more years..

And yes of course! Hope you may enjoy some day :) ALSO, it appears Clannad is on sale for 65% off right now - hopefully that isn't a regional thing? Maybe you could take advantage of that if you so wished. :)

funnily enough I actually saw a picture of KS on imgur of all places, thought it was worth a search, and the rest is history. Looking back I've realized time and time again that that exact moment is probably responsible for my interest in VNs and anime in general - without it, I'm not sure what I'd be doing for entertainment today. It's strange to think that all the fond memories of anime shows that I've felt are largely resting on the laurels of that one moment back in 2016.

I've personally enjoyed taking it back to anime from that time period - for whatever reason I really love media from that time period, whether it be anime, movies, or music. A personal theory I have is that it was the 'golden age' where the Internet allowed for the mass proliferation of sharing and ideas, and was still young enough to be viewed as a hobby and not as a means to an end - that end being profit... May'be I'm just a bit old, who knows. But it feels like media used to have far more soul.

In truth, I haven't played many VNs at all! Really just Katawa Shoujo (which I would heartily recommend), Clannad, and Doki Doki Literature Club. A few others, but nothing that sticks out compared to those. Doki Doki is only a few hours, maybe 3 or 4 tops? A blind playthrough of Katawa Shoujo will take you about 5-6 hours to complete a route but it's worth it - I played my first route in a single night and loved it ever since (Hanako best girl). Oh goodness, maybe it's the booze I'm drinking but I'm heartily feeling a Katawa Shoujo run RIGHT NOW... I'm such a bad influence, teehee. But really I think it's worth the slightly longer playtime to play Katawa Shoujo!!! Here's a link. :)

The VN for Clannad itself actually popped up through discussion around another VN I played many years ago - Katawa Shoujo, a free VN created by 4chan of all places. Despite its origins it's a masterpiece that I've actually committed to replaying once a year between Christmas and New Years, even after completing all the routes. This past holiday season is the first time I've failed to follow through on that commitment. Eventually, I simply saw Clannad on Steam and went from there. I didn't really get 'back into' anime until about a year or so ago, so naturally I didn't know about the anime adaptation until after the fact.

The few VNs I've experienced have either been free downloads or via Steam, correct. If you search up Katawa Shoujo a free link is simple to find, for instance. Others I'm not well versed in, but perhaps that's tomorrow's endeavor.

I'm roughly 3/4 through Kanon - compared to Clannad/AS it can't compare too much, sure, but it's worth watching regardless IMO. Good stuff thus far! You really do notice parallels when it comes to their writing styles and choices.

The killer of 3-1 actually matters a significant amount - especially in the final chapter or two! It tends to follow Suichi a lot at those points and provides important insight for his actions late game.

I have played Clannad, yes! It's how I first got into the series and chose to watch the anime afterward, mostly because I heard the After Story takes your breath away. In fact, I decided to start Kanon largely because if I finish that then After Story it will make After Story my 100th completed anime on the site. :) it's not the worst price when on sale, but all I can say is that God for YouTube playlists ;)

This is just me personally, and I was probably in some sort of weird daze playing through it, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the Tomoyo VN route. Large parts of it simply felt too forced or cliche to me. That being said, her route is commonly cited as a favorite far more than my favorites, so take that as you will. Probably just personal differences! It's not written badly by any means, just not for me!

I've been wondering how I'll even get around to being able to play the Kanon VN, really. It seems hard to find online thus far, but I probably just haven't dug deep enough. But I've enjoyed the anime thus far! It had a similar bit like Clannad where I thought it really warmed up after the first half dozen or so episodes, presumably when they switch from a common route to the more specialized ones.

One of my favorite parts of the Danganronpa trials is how, when they were done well, the clues felt like they didn't tell you a damn thing during the investigation and piecing them together during the trials was where you'd figure it all out.

And yea I thought the same thing on 3-1! Shame she's gone so soon :( she gets plenty of time during spinoffs like Danganronpa S, but that's mostly fanservice anyway :( thankful for it, but knowing what I know about it now I probably woulda just watched all the interactions on YouTube or something.

After starting Kanon I'm almost wondering if it would be for the best to read the VN first, too. When I did that with Clannad I really enjoyed the mixing of the routes and seeing what was new, what was adapted to the anime, and really just seeing it all animated at all. Felt like an extra little 'goodie basket' for these characters I've really enjoyed over that longer VN playtime. But I still preferred the VN since you got to dig into the story way more - though, I did recently watch the Tomoyo OVA for Clannad and for whatever reason I was able to appreciate the story so much more in that medium than the VN... sorry for rambling, LOL. I guess I'll just watch Kanon, play the VN, then see which order I really like better in retrospect!

What I really hated is how that ending just felt like it sucked the soul out of literally everything that's occured in the entire series. Like I really really loved chapter 2 of the first game, and when they specifically used it as an example at the ending and how that all was essentially a setup, I was just so upset.

The moment they drop the victim of 2-5 is just, insane. Like I saw a meme about that moment years later and instantly thought of them, and I scrolled down to the comments and the most liked comment just said their name. There was literally no danganronpa context at all, but wow is it all so memorable. I often wonder what it would have been like to have both the victim and the 'killer' in the final chapter.

I think I'm noticing what you mean by KyoAni's charm - I just started Kanon (2006) at someone's recommendation and it has that same appeal that really drew me into Clannad. I look forward to checking out more of their stuff!

Yeeeea I can definitely see how a spoiler for V3 would do that. It really took the steam out of me and I'd been invested in the series since the start of the first one.

2-5 was absolutely bonkers, man. How they used Nagito's luck like that - I swear I felt like I saw it coming but holy crap. And I really loved how 2-4 inverted the typical murder motivation as well. It really was a solid pair of cases. Which I think was needed after 2-3.. it's like I get it, and I appreciate how it did shed light on how they really were the Remnants of Despair, but it still felt weird to change characters like that. Some things felt especially forced - like the minute Ibuki started acting weird I knew she was toast :( But that's just Danganronpa in general, really. Fun and suspenseful albeit somewhat predictable.

I should really get more into the people that produce more, I feel like it's a good way to connect medias and find new stuff to watch too!

I loved Danganronpa 2 as well! My personal favorite of the series, I think it was the strongest of the trilogy story-wise. Characters were probably matched as far as 1 and V3 go, and the gameplay felt advanced from 1 and yet not super gimmicky like some of the minigames in V3. What made V3 hard to finish for you? A blind guess bets you hung up the towel around chapter 3 or 4.

Any favorite or particularly disliked trials?

Yeah I thought the Nier Automata anime was neat! Highlighted lots of story for 2B that we didn't see in the game. I mostly have him faved for his part in the Nier games - I loved them!!! I felt strongly about and related to the themes of purpose that it presented.

Otherwise, I have no idea who to pick for favorite people, I never tend to dig that much into the production side of things. I'm a simply fellow, unfortunately. :p

Oh nice! Which episode are you on? I just finished the Misae-san arc and I was thoroughly impressed with how they've done those thus far in After Story. Appreciating it a lot but still excited to really get to 'the meat' of the anime, if that makes sense.
