Contains romance that has complexity and reflection to real life story. The portrayal of the characters are deep and rich in personality & emotion.

Not your basic stereotypical romance anime. Best suited for you, who enjoys the ‘elitist’ list in korean drama version.

Cross Game
TV, 2009, 50 eps Me:- Author:9
My #1, best of the best romance anime you’ll ever find. Well, I know this kind of anime is so niche that it wouldn’t be for anyone.

This one is the best work of legendary Mitsuru Adachi who is well-known to make a love story blended with sports, friendship, family, and slice of life. He’s been described as “a genius at portraying everyday life” which also proven by this work.

If you are looking for an engaging daily romance, complex characters (you wouldn’t be able to read their minds), but also surprisingly heartfelt at every seconds, then this one is for you.

*if you like Reply Series (K-Drama), this one is DEFINITELY for you!

Kono Oto Tomare!

Kono Oto Tomare!: Sounds of Life

Kono Oto Tomare!
TV, 2019, 13 eps Me:- Author:10
THE MUSIC!! I couldn’t really explain why, but every time they get to perform in this anime, the music just flows right into my heart… and later into my eyes. Yes, I cried a river!

This is the kind of rare anime that makes you truly understand their feelings by listening to the sound they made. As if I felt their journey along the way while listening to their music.

Although, you need to continue to the manga if you really want to know more about the romance part.

Make Heroine ga Oosugiru!

Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!

Make Heroine ga Oosugiru!
TV, 2024, 12 eps Me:- Author:9
A new one, but became one of my favorites instantly! You could say this is a more recent version of Oregairu. They deal with many different cases of “losing heroine”, so you’ll see many characters development along the story.

The characters are all unique in their own way, so it’s very enjoyable and wholesome to watch even when in fact.. they are all heartbroken.
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.
TV, 2011, 11 eps Me:- Author:9
What do we have to say about this one? Just go watch it, and you’ll understand. This anime delve deeper into the process of overcoming grief in a unique supernatural way. In the end, it makes you value life more and doesn’t just take it for granted.
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun
TV, 2012, 13 eps Me:- Author:9
One of the old gen. Kinda stereotypical, but weirdly I do enjoy this one. I think it’s because the interaction between two main characters are somehow interesting.

Set in high school, so they’re still trying to get to know themselves better or about how social works. The hardships they get to experience are simple, but the way they portrayed and showed it to you.. it’ll make you understand them better than what you’ve expected.

And the best part, you’ll feel a calm emotional nostalgic feelings when watching this.
Koe no Katachi
Movie, 2016, 1 ep Me:- Author:9
RICH! Rich in emotion. Rich in distress. Rich in life lessons.

Once again, this anime will make you go along the journey with them.
Mix: Meisei Story
TV, 2019, 24 eps Me:- Author:8
ANOTHER MITSURU ADACHI’S MASTERPIECE!

Yes, I AM obsessed with his way of telling stories. This one also combines romance and sport (which I find quite rare in the whole industry, so it’s a bonus point already).

The plot is simple and realistic yet it always keeps me on the edge of my seat.
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru.
TV, 2013, 13 eps Me:- Author:9
THE ORIGINAL COMPLEX EMOTIONAL DEEP-MEANING ROMANCE ANIME!

It’s a super slow burn romance. You wouldn’t know who would end up with whom if you don’t wait until the very end.

I think it’s one of the first romance anime who values characters development on being a human. It’s simply relatable. And the way they solved every problem: surprising and genius!

Warning: you might get heartbroken, well.. that’s why we called it life, right?
Kokoro ga Sakebitagatterunda.
Movie, 2015, 1 ep Me:- Author:9
Another story that makes you understand their feelings by music not just dialogues.
Kokoro Connect
TV, 2012, 13 eps Me:- Author:9
ONE OF A KIND! I think you’ll almost never find another one like this.

The supernatural part of the story is somehow confusing, but in the end that’s the selling-point. This anime deal with many adolescent issues using supernatural approaches.
Hachimitsu to Clover
TV, 2005, 24 eps Me:- Author:8
Everyone knows that if you need a coming-of-age story, where it teaches you many things such as love, friendship, dreams, and LIFE itself.. you’d probably come after this one, automatically.

This type of story doesn’t come often in the whole anime industry. Since it delves into a deeper sense of realistic emotion in our everyday life. So I was glad, I gave this one a try.

Yes it has everything, drama, romance, comedy, slice of life. But the most important one is that, THIS ANIME WILL TEACH YOU MANY THINGS ABOUT LIFE!! And sadly, heartbreak is one of them.

Gimai Seikatsu

Days with My Stepsister

Gimai Seikatsu
TV, 2024, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
Well.. the story delve into a not-so-natural relationship between two step siblings. Told in the most calming, slow-yet-intriguing way. I had to give a thumbs up for the director.

The story isn’t special or anything but the WAY they told the story… just wow!

Nisekoi

Nisekoi: False Love

Nisekoi
TV, 2014, 20 eps Me:- Author:8
Yup, the original love-polygon war!

Not so deep in emotional since it’s harem and comedy. But, I remember the MC’s voice actor is so good that in one scene, when he said somewhat harsh words towards one of the heroine, I got hurt instead: Me.

I read the manga btw, and sadly this anime didn’t get continuation after S2.
Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Koujou
Movie, 2023, 1 ep Me:- Author:8
Yes, the fantasy aspect is super confusing, but the relationship and chemistry between characters are top-notch.

Even when you have not know about what their real relationships are, you already know there’s something behind the curtain, that type of story.
Sakamichi no Apollon
TV, 2012, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
This anime also told in a calming and quiet way. Makes you ponder about their emotion more while watching.

Slowly absorbing you inside the story and voila!

Yofukashi no Uta

Call of the Night

Yofukashi no Uta
TV, 2022, 13 eps Me:- Author:8
It’s 2AM, but you’re laying in your bed with eyes wide open? Okay, I got you, watch this one!

Actually I forgot about the whole emotional thing but I remember that the scene in the swimming pool gave me butterflies in the middle of night, so yeah.. why not put it on the list.

Fuufu Ijou, Koibito Miman.

More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers.

Shouldn’t be on list.. but since this anime is the one that got me into romance so let’s give it a toast!
Horimiya
TV, 2021, 13 eps Me:- Author:9
Instead of emotionally rich, this one actually a bit more comedic. But it’s enjoyable really, and has many characters so you get to see various perspectives.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

Of course this romance makes you feel something. Rolling on the ground laughing for example. LOL, yeah it’s thaaat funny!

Yesterday wo Utatte

Sing "Yesterday" for Me

Yesterday wo Utatte
TV, 2020, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
I don’t really remember why but my emotional state are a whole mess when watching this. Ups and downs. Over and over again. So maybe, it’s an emotion-provoking one?

Nagi no Asu kara

A Lull in the Sea

Nagi no Asu kara
TV, 2013, 26 eps Me:- Author:8
The amount of drama they put into this one is mesmerizing. So many love triangles happen at the same time.

But even when the romantic plot does stand out in this one, it doesn’t really overwhelm the other aspects. Since they also put their focuses into the world-building, the fantasy part, and the whole backstory of what was going on.
Taishou Otome Otogibanashi
TV, 2021, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
This one is pretty simple actually, it’s about a usual arranged marriage story. I didn’t even expect anything from the female main character in the beginning but, it gets better. Somehow I could feel the emotional journey they went through.

Kotonoha no Niwa

The Garden of Words

Kotonoha no Niwa
Movie, 2013, 1 ep Me:- Author:8
Blossoming love and calming rain. What could possibly go wrong?

This story is aesthetically emotionally pleasing to the bone. The raw emotion they inserted towards every single frame exploded beautifully. It’s calming and soothing, yet at the same time, it’s heart-wrenching.
Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
TV, 2014, 22 eps Me:- Author:7
Hmmm… I didn’t think I need to explain this one. But I can say that if you need something to burn up the emotion inside yourself so that you can enjoy the physical sensation of it, go watch this one.

One sure thing, this series has one of the best soundtracks out there!
Kimi no Na wa.
Movie, 2016, 1 ep Me:- Author:8
Fantasy, Romance, Drama done right!

You know the red string theory? This anime proved that theory quite a bit too literally.
