Yoshiyuki Tomino is a Japanese anime director, screenwriter, songwriter and novelist best known for creating the Gundam anime franchise.

Tomino is noted for directing several well-known anime series throughout his career, most notably for transforming the "Super Robot" mecha anime genre into the "Real Robot" genre with the Mobile Suit Gundam series, beginning in 1979, and which was later followed onto numerous sequels, spinoffs and merchandising franchises, Brave Raideen (1975) (in which he directed the first 26 episodes), Space Runaway Ideon (1980), Aura Battler Dunbine (1983), and numerous others. His newer work includes Brain Powerd (1998), Turn A Gundam (1999), Overman King Gainer (2002) and most recently, Gundam Reconguista in G (2014).

The TV series is based on a manga by Osamu Tezuka. This anime marks the directorial debut of Yoshiyuki Tomino (best known as the creator of Gundam). The anime altered plot points, characters, including the ending that differed significantly from the original manga.

The TV series was created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, it was the first Gundam series, which has subsequently been adapted into numerous sequels and spin-offs. The series was later re-edited for theatrical release, and split into three movies. It is set in the year U.C.0079 in the Universal Century timeline of the Gundam series.

The theatrical movie trilogy is a re-edited version of the original TV series. Each of the three films is largely made up of old footage from the TV series, but Tomino felt that some things could be changed for the better.

The first film is a compilation of episodes 1-13 of the TV series.

The TV series was created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, produced immediately following his signature work, Mobile Suit Gundam. Originally, the series was planned to be 43 episodes long, but was cancelled after only 39 episodes were aired. However, the remaining four episodes were modified and expanded into the sequel movie The Ideon: Be Invoked (1982).
