Anime to Watch With Parents (Little to no Fan Service)
Anime
So, you have a parent who is always asking “What is this anime thing about, anyway? Why do you like it so much?” and you want to finally show them without the hassle of uncomfortable scenes ruining your experience?
This stack will feature three classifications, each one with a different level of ‘sanitisation’ from your typical anime tropes.
Level 3 “SUPER SQUEAKY CLEAN!”:
- Most of these are either slice of life, CGDCT (but with no express Yuri), or shows originally targeted towards children.
- These feature no ‘suggestive’ material, no gore / overt violence, no dark themes, no profanity (in dub), and are essentially appropriate for all ages.
- May include elements of magic or mysticism, so I would still do further research if you have particularly conservative religious parents.
- Some mild fight scenes may be present, but all of which are justified for “morally correct” purposes (e.g. saving the world).
- May include off-screen or backstory character deaths, but nothing graphic is shown in relation to this.
Level 2 “Moderately clean”:
- Will include scenes with violence, but no “gore for the sake of gore” moments.
- Will still mostly refrain from suggestive material, but may mention such things for jokes or feature beach scenes once in a while (although these won’t actually lead to anything, being relatively appropriate given the context).
- Some of these entries can get quite dark thematically, being closer to what on might rate as “only suitable for teens and older” but just minus blatant “shock value” scenes.
Level 1 “Actually, my parents are pretty chill”:
- Only recommended for parents who you KNOW FOR CERTAIN are alright with watching mature content.
- Includes anything aside from obviously explicit genres (ecchi, hentai, etc.).
- May include violent gore sequences, intense fights often utilising weapons, openly homosexual relationships (if you have conservative parents, go back to Level 2 or 3), and barely-censored onsen or shower sequences (basically anything aside from bare breasts or genitalia is fair game).
- I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND starting with media from one of the upper levels before proceeding here, just to be safe.
*THESE RATINGS APPLY TO ALL CANNON MEDIA IN THE FRANCHISE, UNLESS EXPLICITLY STATED IN THE ADJACENT PARENTHESES.
**OF COURSE, THESE ARE JUST GUIDELINES USING MY OPINIONS. MAKE SURE TO WATCH OR AT LEAST READ THOROUGH REVIEWS BEFOREHAND JUST IN CASE I MISSED SOMETHING YOU WOULD FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE WITH.

Movie, 1988,
1 ep
Me:-
Author:7
Level 3 (this applies to pretty much any Studio Ghibli movie EXCEPT Grave of the Fireflies which is depressing enough to rank a Level 2)
Movie, 2016,
1 ep
Me:-
Author:8
Level 2.5 (aside from a very brief moment of historical violence towards the end, this would have classified as a Level 3)
TV, 2017,
12 eps
Me:-
Author:8
Level 2 (Although if they enjoy it enough to read the manga, I will warn that it drops to a Level 1 towards the end)
TV, 2017,
12 eps
Me:-
Author:8
Level 2 (Beware that the first OVA special (not the main series) classifies as a Level 1 as it is entirely set with the characters nude (censored, but still)).
TV, 2000,
19 eps
Me:-
Author:8
Level 1.5 (Level 2 if you watch in Sub, Level 1 if you watch in Dub)
TV, 2019,
12 eps
Me:-
Author:9
Level 1 (do me a favour and don’t show them Season 2. It’s so terrible that it runs the risk of making them hate anime as a whole :/)
