50 different series from 50 different years. While most of these are my favorites from year to year, I have included some I thought should get a bit more of a spotlight on. It actually took me a lot longer to put this list together than I thought it would, some years had a lot of good picks and it was hard to pick out either a favorite or one that should be highlighted.

Note there are a few years I have not seen a show from (a few years from the 70s) so I will add some from my PTW or that were impactful.

1972: Thee OG hotblooded mecha show, you already know its good when one of the main characters names is just "Boss".

1979: The series that started it all, seeing this on Toonami as a kid got me hooked on the franchise and really gave me a huge obsession with the action figures in my preteens.

1980: The sequel to one of the most famous series ever, might be overall even more infamous than the first season.

1981: A movie adaption of a mecha series that was cancelled half way through airing. So you have a condensed movie version of an already super condensed TV series and its safe to say a lot of shit in this movie just doesn't make sense due to all the cuts.

1988: I was going to go with Legend of the Galactic Heroes for 88, but something about Gunbuster just compelled me to go with it for 88, I love Noriko and I love this series.
Dragon Ball Z

1989: I feel like I'm forced to go with DBZ here, its pretty much the franchise that introduced everyone from my generation to anime.

1990: Based on DnD games played by the authors, you get a classic series with knights, elves, dwarves, dragons, etc. Watched this on the international channel as a kid.

1991: Originally supposed to be a full series, it was eventually compressed into just a movie with decent animation but a very strange story with classic bad Tomino characters. Also as I type this I'm just now realizing that this series called F91 and it came out in 91.

1992: I love this series, it is the franchise that really made me an anime fan as a kid. The filler is also pretty fun in this one.

1993: A fan favorite movie, though a pretty big departure from the TV series and OVA which was super light hearted and silly.

1994: This is a really weird one that I enjoyed for the most part. It has some big ideas about robots, souls, and ones humanity, but it goes a bit far at the end.
Neon Genesis Evangelion

1995: Maybe the most famous TV anime series ever, nothing really much I can say that hasn't been said.
Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan

1996: Classic shounen franchise with lots of the classic tropes.

1998: The perfect mahou shoujo series, it has it all, action, comedy, romance, drama, and most important for a mahou shoujo show, lots of cute costumes for our magical girl.
Di Gi Charat

1999: The first show I ever saw about otaku culture, a true turn of the century show. Also Miyuki Sawashiro's first role ever was in this show.
Boogiepop wa Warawanai

2000: A very weird show, with a very dementia heavy feel. When I think of this show, I think of huge shadows covering every shot.
Alien 9

2001: Of the many mahou shoujo deconstrution there are out there, this might be the first, or at least the first that I have seen.

2003: I loved the Matrix as a teen, and I loved this anthology series with 8 distinct and unique stories.

2004: I have so much to say about the GitS franchise in general but the main thing I want to say is the complex and fleshed out characters are why I love this franchise so much.

2005: I really love the episodic nature of this show, in fact we need more episodic anime in general. Not everything has to be a big epic overarching story.

2006: Depressing but also uplifting series that deals with themes and mental illness a lot of us don't like to talk about.

2007: This was another hard year to choose from, while TTGL is up there with my favorite series ever, there where a lot of other huge series in 2007 to choose from like Lucky Star, Seirei no Moribito etc. Can you believe this was 15 years ago?

2008: Another very unique looking series with great characters, dystopian future, and very very strange visuals and sound.

2009: Psychedelic episodic show about a psychiatrist that helps a wide variety of patients. The art style in this show is very very unique.

2010: Insane is how I would describe this series, probably one of the funniest series I have seen.
Hunter x Hunter (2011)

2011: Great characters, setting, fights, villains, plotlines, and easily the best power system in any series I have seen or read.

2020: A great movie that is incredibly well animated. One of the very few movies I will go back and watch from start to finish easily, especially the fight scenes.
Odd Taxi

2021: The dialogue in this series is what makes it great to me, the conversations some of the characters have feel so real and not like things you usually hear in anime. No exaggerated "ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?" for example.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
ONA, 2022, 10 eps Me:- Author:9
2022: One of my favorite series in recent memory, great characters, art style, action, and a very simple but fast paced plot that is always rolling forward. Some of the scene in this series are super memorable and I still actively think about them. Also I guess I should note I have never played the game, and knew almost nothing about the lore going in and still massively enjoyed this anime.
