Varying degrees of critique at play, some fully break apart the genre they stem from, others break down a few commonalities within said genres, or just within media as a whole.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
TV, 2011, 12 eps Me:- Author:9
Confronts how actually giving young girls that much power and responsibility would impact their mental health and relationships.
[As a huge fan of this series, I actually disagree with the concept of it being a ‘dark magical girl show’ as magical girl shows have typically have very dark scenes throughout! Sailor Moon for example!]
Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru
TV, 2014, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
Often unfairly toted as a Madoka ripoff, this anime is a very enjoyable one that takes a similar angle as Madoka, but with more focus on the physical repercussions being a magical girl would carry.
Shoujo Kakumei Utena
TV, 1997, 39 eps Me:- Author:-
Tears down Shoujo romance and fairytale tropes. I have seen it aptly described as ‘The Princess saved the Witch from the Prince’
Shinseiki Evangelion
TV, 1995, 26 eps Me:- Author:8
If I didn’t include this one someone would stab me. Examines the true emotional toll having to fight and pilot mechs would have on children.
Tiger & Bunny
TV, 2011, 25 eps Me:- Author:8
The superheroes are all televised, and get points for helping people. They have sponsors, managers, etc. . Many things are discussed, and their motivations are all impacted by the draw of fame a superhero gets in this world (bar the protagonist); for example one character is initially only a hero to try and launch an idol career.
Boku no Hero Academia
TV, 2016, 13 eps Me:- Author:8
Some exploration as to how a culture idolising heroes would work. Later in the series, there is a lot of discussion on hero culture by the villains of the series. Main critiques include how civilians are less helpful as a result of the heroes being there.
Samurai Flamenco
TV, 2013, 22 eps Me:- Author:-
Adds a layer of realism to many superhero tropes.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
TV, 2014, 12 eps Me:- Author:9
The main characters are making the shoujoiest Shoujo romance manga, and many of the genres tropes are affectionately made fun of as a result.
