Preliminary (6/12 eps)
When the trailer for Tbate initially dropped, so did my hopes for a watchable adaptation. Fast forward a month and to my shock, that trailer was in fact the highlight of the show.

So, what does it do well?

Tbate does a good job at showcasing how corners are cut in animation. Most shows do this to save budget for key moments, but Tbate is unique in that those moments are nowhere to be seen. Rather there is simply a spectrum of quality for those cuts, which range from industry standard to lip flaps which eat a characters chin. These moments are proudly displayed and very frequent, perhaps serving as an academic resource or reference point for animators and viewers alike. If looking at 12 episodes of that sounds interesting, then that can be the value this show takes away from you.

What doesn't it do well?

The uniquely displeasing aspect of the show was the constant flashbacking from Arthurs PNG family to his life as king Grey. These random snippets don't flesh out Grey's character nor do they provide substance for his previous world. They get in the way of the actual story and serve only to disorient the viewer. Why this was done is a mystery. Calling it 'experimental' instead of 'sabotage' is about as charitable as this review can get.

If only they had they had some sort of well received template to follow, like a webtoon or something.

The story?

I'm sure its buried somewhere inside the slop. I don't recommend trying to find it.
