Fire Force Manga Review – 9/10

After watching the latest episode of Season 3 and seeing what was about to happen to Captain Obi, I couldn’t wait any longer, I jumped straight into the manga and finished it. And honestly, I was not disappointed.

To give a quick rundown: Fire Force follows a group of firefighters, primarily Squad 8, whose mission is to defeat "Infernals," humans who spontaneously combust and to save as many lives as possible. Over time, the story unfolds to reveal a larger threat in the form of the Evangelist, a religious cult trying to bring about the Second Great Cataclysm and end the world. Our protagonist, Shinra, and the rest of Squad 8 play major roles in stopping these apocalyptic plans. The series blends action, mystery, and lore building in a way that's worth both reading and watching.

From Season 3 onward, the story becomes wild in the best way. The real world connections, the actual end of the world events, the idea that they have to bring hope and lewdness was a form of hope in one scene, and the tie in to the Soul Eater universe all took me by surprise. The final arc especially stands out, with imagination overtaking the natural laws of reality. It sounds chaotic, but with the influence of Adolla, it all just makes sense with how it changes the laws of physics.

That said, I do have a few minor complaints mostly continuity based. For instance, after Tamaki unlocked her advanced Nekomata form (the one with the fiery cat face around her face in Chapter 171), I don’t recall ever seeing it again. Maybe I missed it, but it felt like it just never shows up again.

Then there’s Hysterical Strength. It was such a cool concept when Shinra and Arthur used it, but while it’s mentioned later, I don’t remember seeing it again. It could be the manga doesn't visualize it as well, and it did happen.

The whole subplot about Shinra and Sho’s mother being a doppelganger of the True Evangelist opens up some strange questions. She gave a virgin birth to both boys, but does that mean Infernals can have children? Or was there some kind of body-switch during her combustion? I know infernals can take over bodies, but as the doppelganger of another being who has a physical appearance it makes me confused. It’s been a while since I revisited the early chapters, so maybe there’s an explanation I forgot.

Lastly, there’s the odd gap in Shinra’s memory between the first and fifth Pillars. After waking up from that blank period, not much is made of the time skip other than working with the Squad and hitting Iris. What I mean is there's was no interaction between Shinra and characters like Tamaki or Maki to discuss what they saw during his alternate personality phase, even though they’re supposedly we're in the squad during that time. That felt like a missed opportunity to see some crazy reactions.

Still, despite these hiccups, Fire Force was an excellent ride. The pacing, characters, action, and lore delivered a powerful finish to an already strong series. I highly recommend both the anime and manga.
