There's a lot of criticisms about this anime that I can get into. The animation quality is inconsistent, to put it mildly. The first few episodes it's literally been still pictures and cut frames only. Isagi's extensive monologues can get annoying and drag out. The tactics are absolutely dogshit; or should I say there are no tactics when 5 players are running in a straight line up the field in a counter-attack. Replaying the ball hitting the net 8 times got on my nerves.
And yet, I was addicted for the entire season. Learning new characters and the abilities of Japan's u-20 was what I was looking forward to. The charisma of Oliver Aiku is charming and he very quickly became one of my favorites. Wanting to see the true abilities of Itoshi Sae after being teased in season 1, and the battle with Rin. The constant evolution of many players on the field to take their game to the next level brought home some iconic moments (Nagi's goal was INSANE!!!). Me selfishly wanting to see how the players respond after seeing the other side take the lead in stunning fashion. The sound effects completely elevating the moment in time during the game. I mean, there was an aura around this show that just kept me glued to it week-in and week-out.
Definitely worth a watch for the amateur soccer fan, or any shonen fan really.
