Please be aware that Blue lock was 2023's number 1 top selling manga (topping JJK, Chawinsaw Man and One Piece). It consistently puts out big numbers and has arguably only gotten better with time.
The fact that the manga is utterly breathtaking, has stunning art and direction, and none of its qualities are captured in any shape or form is criminal. Not in season 1 (which was mediocre), let alone this dreadful season 2. None of the impactful panels are being done justice, nor are we getting actual fluid animation anywhere (except for a few moments, including the last episode.), and the direction is COMPLETELY off the mark. There is nothing okay about this.
(The last episode had a showdown that really captured the potential Bluelock has, the show deserves that kind of quality every second. Sadly, it was a one time thing for the final moment. As much as I do not like this season, that was something that needs to be witnessed.)
Main issue:
The inadequate animation and direction, along with the lack of anatomy- and football knowledge. The bodies often look disproportional (especially during movement) and any time a character is not standing completely still, everything looks off with the motion. It really does not help it that the animation is non-existent (called Png lock for a reason). The art itself can be alright, even good sometimes, but it does not make up for anything, because the "good art" is the exception.
Adding insult to injury, combine the animation with the direction and way the anime tries to showcase what is happening, you just get a recipe for disaster. There is no comprehension or understanding of the source material. Not the players positions, the impact or technicality of the plays, the small details, nothing is done faithfully.
Side issues:
As for Blue lock Additional time! AKA Clown lock, it is a very questionable segment that kind of breaks immersion. The idea of it is okay, but the execution is second-rate. Oh, it also borderline has more frames than the episodes (it's still images).
Also, the structure for the English subtitles throughout the series is very weak, none of it carries the weight it should. Just sounds weird and unfitting. The slurs and curse words' substitutes are really lame. The intensity of expressions is important.
Great deserves great, and this is not it. Blue lock deserves what the likes of OPM s1 and Demon slayer got, the exceptional talent and love being put into the series throughout, elevating the experience. Blue lock is a masterpiece, and I know there are countless others who feel the same, it deserves so much more. The bar is absurdly low for 2023's best seller and a world renowned series, one of the best sports manga made. Unbelievable. If it was done right, every single second, every character moment, every shot and every breath taken could have had astounding quality due to the charm of the source material. The anime absolutely kills this series and leaves it tasteless. Not one shred of care.
The voice actors are about the only enjoyable part of the experience, the music is experimental, not my taste at all, nor great, but I can see the appeal. There are those rare moments where a goal looks alright, but other than that, this is a crude product that should be buried deep down and forgotten about, until a proper studio with common sense picks it up and does a remake...
Why must this happen? Did we not learn from Tokyo ghoul and Berserk? As someone once said, history sadly repeats itself.
