I think you need to have some interest in football since it is full of analyses of players and games which many won't grasp fully and truly enjoy the masterpiece that is Ao Ashi.
Although I said you need to understand football, this manga still does very well as a sports manga. Interesting characters, great development, intense and exhilarating games and moments and very relatable and realistic.
