This is an unremarkable series, to put it nicely. I was shocked at how high this anime was rated, given how awful I found it.
--- Summary ---
This is an isekai story about a Japanese woman living her second life in a Medieval-themed setting - nothing unfamiliar. Now, the premise of the story is that the protagonist loves reading, but her destitute circumstances and the illiteracy of common folk make it hard for her to fulfill this desire. As the story unfolds, she eventually gets her hands on books, amazes locals with her modern-day knowledge, and creates a nice niche for herself.
--- Critique ---
My biggest criticism of this story is how unbearably immature the protagonist is. While this is not rare for isekai stories, which are sometimes described as manifestations of m*sturbatory power fantasies, I find the protagonist's behaviour inhuman. Namely, the way in which she expresses her discontent in not having access to books, and the way in which this behaviour is framed, is blatantly appalling. For instance, she severely inconvenienced her cash-strapped family by demanding books, which were understandably expensive. This would be fine, if framed in the context of a 'growth' story where the protagonist grows as the story progresses, and, for instance, learns the importance of compromise and/or develops a sense for accepted social norms. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Some people may argue about the protagonist's 'mental age,' but this is personally a non-issue: either way, I find the protagonist to be one-dimensional, unrelatable - just downright awful.
In terms of traditional criteria, this anime is pretty lackluster. Character designs and visuals are bleak and unimpressive, as can be seen from its posters. The voice acting is good, but not memorable.
--- Conclusion ---
I would not recommend watching this series unless you can tolerate extremely immature characters. As I mentioned, other aspects of this series are what I consider bearable, about expected for another budget isekai, or below average if comparing against series with similar MAL scores.
