In case it is obvious, i did not like this one. I (as a gay woman) watch gay animes. While i want expecting this one to really be out there (as kyoani has a history of yuri baiting) i was expecting it to at least be cute, wholesome, or funny. It was not. It was like a slow descent into madness until i eventually felt so sickened i had to stop watching. I like slice of life! One of my favorite. This doesn't know what it wants to be, constantly making jokes then instantly wanting you to feel sad, but then immediately breaking the tone. As such i felt literally nothing for anyone but hatred towards everyone but Tohru. The first episode wasn't horrible! I actually enjoyed it a bit. Not my cup of tea but not bad. The introduction of Kanna.. things went very quickly downhill with a MASSIVE amount of weirdly pedophilic tones surrounding her. I ignored it for the most part as it wasn't her whole character, and i tried to remain optimistic. Then they introduced Shouta. Yes, it is a lot like the porn category which is what the main joke surrounding his character seems to be. It is not funny. It is sickening honestly, especially as a victim of that sort of thing myself. It is not funny because its a little boy. Shouta is 8. I genuinely almost threw up during the beginning of the 7th episode where they vigorously animated louca putting sunscreen on the child, in an almost sexual way (as he then runs away screaming and blushing which is meant to be a joke but is genuinely just depressing.)
Louca is also, canonically, a rapist as the reason she's an ex goddess is from raping her sister. When you know that, every scene with her and the child is 100x worse especially considering she's gotten naked around him. I've seen a lot of disgusting animes, but this just really takes the cake. I don't get the buzz around it when the writing is shit, music placing is garbage, the pacing is non existent, and the majority of jokes the later into the show you get are just haha! child being sexual or thinking sexually! funny!
This is not worth it. This is not enjoyable.
