(Spoilers here)
In the end I kept getting upset over the deaths that happened (aka Sasame dying to be the princess of despair's knight, and Hayate dying to protect Himeno from the tree) but then they came back to life- and I almost shed a tear after Himeno "died" but then she came back to life after Hayate kissed her- I- my feelings had been toyed with at that point. It would have been great if it ended with a little bit of angst, but still a great beam of hope. But it was still good I'd watch it again like the magical girl anime nerd I am.

I read somewhere in the wiki page that the three little kid knights were the reincarnations of the knights who lost their lives 16 years ago in a battle with the princess of despair. I was surprised they didn't include a scene of this in the anime, revealing that they were, indeed, those three knights who lost their lives that day. But ig it's in the manga... I'll need to read it now ahahah
