Redline (Anime) add (All reviews)

I am not going to give this movie the same sort of grading scale that I normally do when it comes to rating anime, because if this was meant to be taken seriously, then this movie has a really stupid plot, is full of cliches, and is loaded with fanservice and I would probably give this movie a much more critical and negative review if I didn't consider the fun factor that Redline has.

Since I had an absolute blast watching this, I like to think that Redline was an intentionally over-the-top thrill ride that you are meant to chug along to and laugh as it gets more and more absurd. The story follows a daredevil race car driver who has never been able to win races. He competes in Yellowline events and is inches away from winning, but ends up losing due to sabotage as his partner mechanic has dealings with the mafia who have him fixing races where he starts in the back, gets in the front, and then is not able to win. So after losing yet another race, our Elvis-haired racer JP is invited to participate in the big-time Redline event not because he qualified, but because two other racers that did qualify backed out since the race is being held on "Roboworld" a planet where war-mongering robots are completely against the idea of racing and want to exterminate all of those participating in the race and they actively try to do throughout the movie with all sorts of crazy weapons such as the "Orbital Disintegration Cannon" or by sending out Colonel Volton and his army to destroy the racers. While all of this craziness is happening, they throw in a cheesy love story with a "big-tiddy" anime girl who they have no qualms with having showing her skin.

This is about as obnoxious and in your face as an anime can get. There are tons of explosions. Lots of yelling between the racers as they struggle to reach the finish line. Cars are reaching levels of ludicrous speeds thanks to "platinum nitro capsules". And as every cliche racing movie should, it ends with things moving so fast, that they have to move it in slow-motion so we can see who wins it all during the photo finish. Redline is absolute BONKERS! And I think I love that.
