Emma, along with other young boys and girl, live in an orphanage surrounded by a forest. There they are cared for "Mom", although she is not their actual mother. By their 12th birthday, and at times before then, children are adopted by loving parents. The only problem is, Emma realizes, is that they're all being lied to. Once she uncovers their horrific reality, how will she protect and save the only family she's ever known and grown up with?
This anime was released in the winter 2019 season of anime. Based on its already successful manga series, its anime adaptation was also a huge success. Firstly, as many people know, it's very hard to make a successful horror or thriller adaptation without simply throwing out blood and gore and explicit scenes. The art of slowly building something up, letting that suspense hang in the air, that is the challenge of such an anime. Saying that, I actually think The Promised Neverland does this very well. The entire plot revolves around trying to outsmart and toe the line with what the children can and can't get away with. I am always a huge fan of characters that are super smart and think three steps ahead. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with the overall theme and motif of this anime. The small problem would have to be the overall human connection they have towards one another as well as the showing of emotion during certain scenes. The situation they're in is truly horrific and yet, even though it is important to be brave, they don't show a lot of fear or similar emotions. But, even with this small hiccup, The Promised Neverland is still a very good anime and was certainly one of the stars in the winter 2019 season. Also, another small note, the opening was a hot beat, and the character designs have become a huge opportunity for memes, especially where the character's faces are concerned. There is a season 2 confirmed that should debut in Jan. 2021.
