The point of "Welcome to the NHK" is to show that life is indeed meaningless. There's ups and downs, but more frequent downs. This anime is an emotional rollercoaster, and it's the first anime I've ever cried watching.
The art is outstanding, making you feel the same pain that Satou feels, all the while making you hate him at the same time.
The sound is fantastic, working in conjunction with the art to provide you with a sense of realism. The opening song is perfect for this anime, because it seems so innocent, but the visuals have dark undertones that make more sense into the anime.
The characters all have their own issues, and that's what makes them real. All of them have had different experiences and different problems. I love and hate every character in this series, and that's how it should be.
Finally, this anime is probably, in my opinion, the greatest piece of media I've ever seen. I am definitely recommending people this.
