Ehhh what can be said about this one...? It's depressing. Very depressing. And although the fantastic soundtrack is funky and upbeat, it works well to establish an eerie and very downbeat atmosphere. The music here is far and away the best aspect of this series and it gives many of the episodes a Suda-51 vibe - which is fine by me and no doubt fine by anyone familiar with the work of Goichi Suda.

Death Parade's first episode is a surprisingly strong start, and although difficult to watch in parts the ending definitely satisfies the urge to know what's going on. Its second episode however is probably its weakest, and although several new characters are introduced, none of them are particularly funny or interesting. This is an indicator of the many slower paced episodes to come (those centered around the arbiters) and I found the show struggled to hold my attention at times. I think I only stuck with it to the end because of the short length. I doubt I would have continued with this series if it were much longer.

With those things being said though, I did really enjoy the concept, artwork, music, and the narrative. Death Parade deals with the ambiguity of good/evil and emotional intent. The smaller stories surrounding each of the 'guests' were genuinely well written and you would be unlikely to guess the outcome of the episode before the final act. The later episodes do tend to drag a little bit, and the ending wasn't exactly satisfying, but it did the job for me as I wasn't left wanting more backstory or anything like that.

If you want to feel depressed, but intrigued in a psychological thriller kind of way, then you could do a lot worse than Death Parade.
