Mixed Feelings
Sol Levante was fun yet disappointing at the same time. I definitely enjoyed looking at what I saw, but disappointment that there wasn't more. (Note - it gets a one on rating because there was no story, and five on character because we don't get to know them well.

However, I think here is a good place to discuss the significance of this particular piece in that it shows what can be done with digital animation. Historically, before digital animation came about, everything was drawn by hand and could take a few years to get a project done, such as a movie. Then, the digital age occurred, with studios like Studio Ghibli using it to churn out works faster, which makes sense given the studio's style which is simplistic in nature.

The problem is, with digital the route in both Japan and the West is to churn out more product of the same quality we've always been getting rather than churning out the higher quality product which takes more time to produce. Basically, this short showcases what could be done with the old industry standards using new technology, yet does the consumer base want say a movie that takes a few years to make over a movie which is made with a few clicks of a button because the computer does the work for the artist?

It's difficult to say, though I think this short shows the level of detail which could be done, but makes one wonder if the industry is where it should be - and by this I mean all around the world.
