It's fine. The hook is the future stuff, but it doesn't become really relevant until way too late in the episode to leave an impact. It's a big ol mystery box, and when they open the mystery box, there's nothing inside of it. The personalities of the characters don't even matter; it's all about the reveal, and the reveal isn't even a twist, per se. It's just an explanation for something else that I cannot imagine someone getting deeply invested in. We don't even get to know why anyone is in love with anyone else.
It mostly takes place in a school, so there's not really any room for 90s anime fashion to be a saving grace here, either.
