The thing to keep in mind about the show is that the focal point isn't so much events that are happening but the relationships between the main cast. More specifically, Zen and Shirayuki's relationship.
For me it was just incredibly refreshing to see two characters who, from the get go, respect and care so much about each other. Every single episode had me smiling wide at their interactions!!! It doesn't hurt that the show is gorgeous and the soundtrack is beautiful.
Are the characters themselves tropes? Absolutely. But the characters' actions keep from some of the most annoying ones from happening. Every time someone or something tries to come between them they don't go all mopey or pine for each other. They know and trust that the other cares and feels the same in return so they face the obstacle head on and there's not a moment where things strain because of it. They are independent characters who stand strong themselves, but the family the main cast becomes is even stronger together.
It's certainly not for everyone, but I adored it. If you like romance focused anime or calm shows to sit back and relax to then this is it!!! I couldn't recommend it more!
