VISUALS/ART:
The visuals of Shinsekai Yori is something peculiar, sometimes it is a wonder and sometimes is horrendous, becoming inconsistent and wrong.
The negative aspects of the anime in terms of the visuals can be appreciated especially in the first episodes, being more specific on 5 and 10, the animation of these chapters is horrendous, the camera approach is annoying (especially in chapter 14), the backgrounds are bad and poorly designed, the drawing looks very different in those episodes and the colors feel weird. The management of the first chapters was in charge of 10 people, so maintaining a high quality during these was a complicated task, apart from the fact that they were just admitted to the studio in the production.
Fortunately, these problems are solved with the passing of the series, although they are not completely resolved. In counterweight to all the above, you can say that the anime when it is proposed looks really bright, with a peculiar aesthetic that is consistent with the atmosphere of the anime.
The character design is good, and stays loyal throughout the series, even in time jumps.
The aesthetics of the world is great, forming a totally original essence for the culture where the story unfolds.
Visuals score: 6/10
SOUNDS:
Shinsekai Yori's music is very good, although somewhat limited, although it is excellent for tense, emotional and dramatic moments, it begins to become somewhat repetitive, although it never becomes annoying. Of all the soundtrack the choirs stand out, since they are the ones that have the best use.
Like the soundtrack, the overall sounds of the series are very good, especially those that gave the cantus (the psychic power of the story). The team in charge of the sound section was able to give a recognizable distinction to all the sounds related to the cantus.
This anime has no opening, well it could be considered that in one episode it has an opening, but rather it is “a scene with a beautiful song”. The two endings of the anime are fabulous although I prefer the first.
The voices of the characters are fluid and characteristic, none feel out of place or that does not combine with the character in question.
Sounds score 8/10
STORY:
We arrived at what really highlights this anime being its magnificent story. One of the adversities facing any work that deals with supernatural issues is to be able to make them consistent with the world that the author has formed. Shinsekai Yori forms a complex and coherent world, where the reason for his behavior and organization will gradually be revealed.
The beginning of the series is quite slow and boring, it feels as if what you were witnessing had no relevance, but after a few chapters this is solved and the anime begins to have a better rhythm.
The world of the series is a true dystopia that formed after a post-apocalyptic world, not like other series that claim to be one or at least appear to be (Mob Psycho 100 ... cof cof), in this world being a human is very cruel, It is a world of strong inhabited by sheep and a world where no one would like to live. I also have to say that it is a somewhat different post-apocalyptic scenario for the anime industry, commonly the world is only built to have an excuse to execute situations; as in Houkuto no Ken where it was just an ornament (at least at the beginning) so that Kenshiro could show us his abilities. The narrative will also emphasize many interesting topics that are covered in an excellent way.
The exhibition of why the world has to be so cruel and strict to the point of using mental, genetic and hormonal manipulation with the inhabitants is presented from the first chapters in a natural and organic way, using stories and the school to run the exhibition . After the exhibition becomes somewhat artificial with the massive introduction of information through a “Library” (I describe it this way to avoid spoilers that could be considered important, it is not quite a library), this has its positive side, since it makes you are more interested in the world and it makes the plot progress and become more interesting, something that in that part of the series was important, but on the contrary it is too much information for the moment and it feels that that “Library” was taken out, To put it in some way, out of nowhere to begin with narrative.
Although the world and its construction are excellent they also have their flaws, such as not making clear some possible questions that the viewer may form during the course of the series or trying to create something incongruous, revealing the latter would be a significant spoiler in the anime context.
The actions in the story have their consequences and the writers do not hesitate to kill a character if necessary.
Story score: 9/10
CHARACTERS:
I would like to say that Shinsekai Yori's characters are just as excellent as his story, but unfortunately this is not so. The main cast of the anime are 6 children: Reiko, Shun, Mamoru, Maria, Satoru and the protagonist Saki. The 6 main characters have a simple personality and characterization, which is not something of the bad and in fact this fact is taken full advantage.
The characters at the beginning of the series seem as if they do not matter, they feel they are there because, except for Saki, who is the only character with whom something is built around him at the beginning of the anime. All children in this group have their own problems related to the world around them and the civilization with which they were raised, these respective issues will be addressed at different times, trying to develop all the characters at the same time would be very chaotic thanks to the cast so rough that the series has.
For good, the story takes a lot of focus on Saki, this is completely understandable, and considering that the other main cast characters are much simpler than her. The protagonist is built in an excellent way although sometimes she can only be a spectator in the face of events. Their problems and ways of acting before the situations are according to their age and their development over time are remarkable.
Even so, the main cast is not saved from having its problems. Mamoru, although he is the shy of the group and the most sensitive to problems, does not take away the fact that it is only the trigger to cause problems and nothing more, feeling more like a resource and not an individual, I would say that this character was used to present how a certain part of the narrative worked so that later it no longer has relevance. Like Satoru it's quite irritating, at least at the beginning of the anime.
The introduction of secondary characters is quite natural, some secondary characters get to have more personality than the main characters, they can become more identifiable to the viewer, and even characters that do not appear so much in the series present a problem or message that will reach our protagonists.
The messages and questions that come to think the characters of the world around them, are expressed in a great way, enriching the experience of anime.
