Preliminary (9/24 eps)
Vinland Saga is a story of a young boy seeking revenge for his Father in a war-torn era where bloodshed is extremely common.

Story 10/10

The story was extremely well done. It progressed pretty quickly for the entirety of it however, despite the pretty fast pace the development of the main character, Thorfinn was slow and perfectly well-paced.
It showed us how he changed from being a curious and rebellious little boy, always wanting to experience war to someone that realised that nothing good can really come out of war.
Conquering, controlling, establishing power and domination. It may be a good thing for the rich and royal but the process of getting there...

Thorfinn seeks revenge against a pirate, Askeladd for ‘not honouring’ the duel with Thorfinn’s father. Thors. Thorfinn was still a little boy at that time when his father sacrificed himself during the duel to protect his son, Thorfinn.

So he trained continuously and kept requesting for a duel from Askeladd eventually becoming ‘apart’ of Askeladd’s crew. He held one hell of a grudge against Askeladd and fought in the war torn era gaining experience in combat and improving a lot. He lost all his duels against Askeladd and lived in pain.

The story also accurately portrayed the era in the 10th century and 11th century. There was constant bloodshed in the seemingly endless war and conquest.

There were many powerful individuals both in brute strength or daunting stature. The endless battlefield where only the powerful survive.

However, it is said that there is a place, a place where the bloodshed and slave trading do not reach. Vinland, where it’s warm and nice. The perfect place that exists amongst the war torn era.

Thorfinn has heard of Vinland from his father and others back at his homeland but his first priority is avenging his father’s death.

Thorfinn was slowly turning into an avenger devoid of important emotions but his father’s words before his passing would always echo in Thorfinn’s head. Words that meant a lot but had yet to make sense to Thorfinn.

Art 10/10

I have to say, the art is spectacular. The art style kept clean to the other WIT Studio productions namely, Attack On Titan for one.
Some scenes had held much meaning while some accurately portrayed certain emotions that the characters are experiencing.

For example, when Thorfinn first saw the sea before the tragedy happened. His expression of awe and amazement had even left his angry father smiling, it was a heartwarming moment that when watching thus far. Will always flash back in my head.
The scene where Thorfinn was filled with rage against Askeladd after his father’s death. The amount of detail put at his expression, Thorfinn was filled with a tremendous amount of bloodlust and rage, his eyes showed it all. It isn’t an expression a kid his age should have.

In a holocaust or war, even the children are killed. Because children can bare grudges too and their rage can develop a bloodlust. Their grudge will not end and they will eventually get their revenge.

Askeladd probably knew that but still spared Thorfinn probably to honour Thorfinn’s father Thors. It may be revealed in the future but for now, I don’t know.

Sound 10/10

Let’s admit it, some of you came because you knew Aimer was singing the ED.
The OP though was also pretty darn amazing.
The Seiyuus did an amazing job as well and some, a huge fucking well done to them. The amount of screaming, emotion and anger in the entire war set time was properly portrayed. Hatred, fear, maniacal emotions and the works can be expressed through tone and the Seiyuus did just that. Well done.

Overall 9/10

Loved it. Every moment of it.
