When this movie was announced, i wasn’t really as excited/hyped as my friends/everyone else to be honest, but when i finished watching with my friends, i became the most enthusiastic.

Story

Most of Makoto Shinkai’s work follows a certain formula, which is

Character introduction – MC & Heroine meeting directly/indirectly – MC & Heroine getting along – Tragedy/Problem happens – Dealing with the problem – Climax/Ending

Having a formula like this is not a bad thing, in fact i think it’s good thing to be consistent as long as the execution is done well. In my opinion, Tenki no ko did a wonderful job of the execution of the formula. The flow of the story was smooth, nothing felt rushed, and overall everything went fine.....except for the “dealing with the problem” part. The plot armor/Deus ex Machina in this part is a bit ridiculous, almost comedic actually and after such a good execution of the other parts of the story, it takes a few points off me.

Art & Sound

Art & Sound are the least of your worries when it comes to watching a Makoto Shinkai movie. With the animation & art direction of CoMic Wave Films and the soundtrack from RADWIMPS, there is nothing to complain about. The art direction and background is breathtaking, the special effects are beautiful, the animation is very fluid, the soundtrack is really good and fits with the atmosphere they’re trying to make, and the voice actors did a great job bringing out the personality of each characters.
Overall, i can’t find a single bad thing in this section.

Character

Almost every character from Makoto Shinkai has their own traits and quirks that makes them relatable/likable and every dialogue between each character brings out their personality so no problem there. The only thing that i find a bit weird is how fast the character’s emotion can change and how there is little to no character development through out the movie. Other than that, i don’t have anything against the characters.

Enjoyment

At this point, it’s pretty obvious that i enjoyed this movie and most of Makoto Shinkai’s fan will definitely enjoy this movie. I’m definitely going to rewatch this while it’s still in theaters.

Overall

Nothing is perfect and Tenki no Ko is no exception however the with the amount of quality this movie has, Tenki no Ko is damn fine piece of art.
