I’ll start off my review by saying I watched the sequel – Virgin Soul – before I watched Genisis, yet I found myself preferring Genesis greatly.

One of the major selling points is the music, something I rarely find myself left talking about in my reviews beyond how well the voice actors do if even that. The music definitely reminds me of Lord of the Rings in how epic the sounds were, yet in the same manner the music fit the tone for every single setting. Music in this definitely ended up telling as much as the narrative and artwork did.

In fact, the setting reminiscent of the wild west mashed up with a medieval setting set up things lovely, for I expected a hero befitting of a story taking place in the wild west, yet I found myself reminded of Trigun with the sci-fi mash up, yet also Cowboy Bepop. The manner in which the wild west themes were incorporated felt organic, yet unlike the other two Genesis manages blending other settings including Roman and Gothic styles depending on the location. Easily these places could be all over the place, yet they’re not.

As for the characters – I can see why Favaro might be a hit or miss given the fact he’s definitely a morally grey character looking out namely for himself. Fate though has other plans for him and what we see of the characters is only part of who they are. We slowly garner more of their backgrounds as the story progresses, at least for the three main characters – and later a fourth. They’re realistic, yet the manner in which the relationships grow are organic even among some of the unexpected side heroes towards the end.

My one regret was the journey ending too quickly. Every piece though has meaning which is brought into the narrative later on, yet the twists are hinted, unique and well thought out.
