After awhile they also turned into side characters in the very manga which is named after them! While other characters got their own romances and storylines, which isn't necessarily bad but that coupled with the change in character just made it worse. I'd still recommend people to read the first 30+ chapters. At that point you'll want to spent more time with these characters though and end up reading everything.
It's still an enjoyable read, but it's frustrating to see such a great start devolve into such mediocracy.
