While it is admirable that My Love Story's premise sticks out quite prominently for a romance title, it does have a major flaw for me in the fact that the individuals making our main relationship don't have much going for them in the way of depth. Takeo is your archetypal imposing male lead in terms of appearance while having a sweeter side, and Rinko is not much better beyond being your beautiful and kind female lead. As there is not much to the couple in regards to personality and depth, this made it hard for me to care much for their relationship developments in spite of its premise sticking out from the norm for your typical romance title. The remaining characters in the series are not better in this regard as many of them also follow archetypes typical of high school themed anime and had little for me to grab my interest for them.
The visuals to the series stick out prominently with its beautiful scenic shots, bright and vivid color, and well-detailed character and object designs. Food admirers might find themselves foaming from the mouth in seeing the nicely drawn cakes and pastries that are often made by Rinko whenever she meets up with Takeo, adding further to the great presentation of this series.
Still in spite of its visuals and somewhat fresh premise, My Love Story is a tricky series for me to want to recommend. Our main couple doesn't get much in the way of fleshing out and the so-called pureness of their relationship felt a bit saccharine for me at a number of points throughout the show's run. While it is considered one of 2015's top titles by anime fans, your mileage may vary with how well you perceive it.
