Both mangas have similar themes dealing with lower class men falling for princesses. In Shinobi Life, a ninja, Kagetora, falls in love with Princess Beni, but because of their statuses and such, they cannot be together. He ends up meeting the Beni of the future, a distant ancestor to the princess.
Similiarly, in Joou no Hana, Hakusei vows to protect and serve Princess Aki for the rest of his life as it is the least he can do because of both his status and appearance. Both characters pledge to serve and protect their princess and both end up falling in love with them.
