Taking place between the real world and a virtual realm, both series blurs a line between fiction and reality. There is an adequate amount of game mechanics that are involved in their story as well. Both series' main male protagonist has similar personalities and develops a strong friendship with main female protagonist. As the story progresses, we learn more about the online world.
Subtle romance later becomes evident between the two main characters.
Accel World takes on a more straightforward approach with its game elements in a shounen style format. Online: The Comic has more of a psychological way of storytelling as there is also survival involved.
