Adventure stories set in a fantasy world, both feature relic weapons with supernatural powers, also comedy elements and a lot of bloody sword fights.

Both are adventure stories animated by White Fox with a nihilistic undertone and perma-death. Where they differ is in their aesthetics and approaches to storytelling

Where Akame ga Kill!'s world and characters treat insanity as a norm, and brutality as an acceptable hobby, Katanagatari does similar things, with many villains with various degrees to their insanity. The 'Teigu' of Akame ga Kill! is also closely reflected in Katanagatari's 'Deviant Blades', extremely powerful relics that can no longer be created. Katanagatari's story revolves around recovering these weapons from the villains, which is also a plot point in Akame ga Kill!. Both anime have elements of thrill and adventure with flashy action, with side dishes of comedy and relationship building.
