If you enjoyed Pokemon as a kid and you are looking for an entry level anime that is fun to watch with a tad more maturity and with a similar art style, then Soul Eater may be for you.
Similarities:
-Both of these shows are shounen
-Both have battles/action regularly
-Both are set in an alternate world to our own
-These two shows have similar characters (Black Star = Ash, Maka's father = Brock, etc...)
-They have similar driving themes
-Both showss have characters with ridiculous names (ex: Black Star, Death The Kid, and Soul Eater Evans in Soul Eater; Brock, Professor Oak, and Misty in Pokemon)
-Both have filler episodes

Both are action packed supernatural stories that focuses around the characters taking on various misadventures and share a ya cast in them.

These two have magical entities, creatures and humans, whom each having their own special ability and move pull. They also take place in a world that is a parallel version of earth where there's many inspired locations with a unique spin to it.
The characters also have personalities with a similar tone together with a heavy amounts of action with a ton of comedic moments. These two are in a longer length which gives you an adventurous vibe.
