Being strong on one and only genre is good, it make a strong positioning for the show. However when the show go for more than one tone, it's worth watching even more, as long as one genre doesn't spoil the others.
This two shows are probably one of the leading high-school romance comedy of its time. Both shows has a potential of a good comedy, while also maintain high standard of drama and romantic content.
The episode can be a pure comedy, pure drama, or mixed, you don't know what to expect for each episode, but that's the charm of these multi-genres romantic comedy.
