Chihiro and Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo are surprising similar if one compare their characteristics side by side. Both are from the "family entertainment" kind of movie. Both anime films have a female character who ends up in some strange land with monsters/spirits. The young male and female characters do have feelings for each other that develop, as well.

A girl is lost in a world different from her own. A world full of mystery and danger. One wanted to save her parents while the other wanted to see her first love. Both had a companion to aid them on their journey.

Makoto Shinkai has said that he is a Hayao Miyazaki fan, so both of these works share many similarities. Both feature a young girl as a main character, as they travel in a fantasy world filled with fantastical creatures. Both anime have beautiful scenery and soundtracks, as well as some romance between the two main characters.

Anyone familiar with Studio Ghibli easily see that Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo was heavily inspired by their films. I feel that the movie it has to most parallels to is Spirited Away as they are both adventure films that take place in a different world, have a female lead, a male lead guide, mysterious creatures and beautiful scenery and soundtrack.
