The genre for both is "pop idol". However, they both have action and sci-fi added in. Both Anime use bright colors and detailed art work. They also break from the norm.

Both animes use music, singers and idols as a way to fight in the world that they are living in, whether it is to survive or for power/hope.

Both series features science fiction elements involving a group of girls in different worlds. Both series involves the theme of music and action involving pop idols doing what they do best: singing, dancing, and kicking ass. Both series has a similar feeling and also has some emotional moments.

Fighting evil with songs in the space! Both are mahou-shojo and idol centered. I did not expect them to be that similar at first BUT THEY ARE. If u love one you should definitely try the other one as well.

Nevermind the space and fighting, theme-wise, AKB0048 and Symphogear both work on the premise that songs and music can change the world. We all have historically seen these, particularly in the 80s-90s where the world was torn between ballistic missiles, KGBs, the Berlin Wall, AK47s, and the operation Desert Storm, and bands like Bon Jovi, Metallica, Scorpions, among other heavy metal bands went up face to face with machine guns, all for the sake of "changing the world through music". Sounds like a premise, eh? These two anime shows does show just that, anime-style.
