[Oshi no Ko]
[This is a repost from my recommendation in second season] Insider knowledge on the entertainment industry! These shows are about competition, lifestyle, the behind the scenes and the dark side of this ambit. Personal struggles, drama, intermingling relationships and the ins and outs of entertainment abounds. Oshi no Ko is broader, containing acting, idols and an entire segment of second season dedicated to manga as well. That part, in particular, was very reminiscent of Bakuman; displaying the hardships of manga adaptation, along with an insight into manga creation. Not only that part is reminiscent though, as the broader theme of the entertainment industry and how it's handled is very similar and even seems inspired. To make it clear, Oshi no Ko leans more into seinen at times and has a very prevalent plot point regarding vengeance. Bakuman, on the other hand, is clearly more of a non-battle shounen. In spite of this, the two franchises have a heavy focus on the perspective of artists and creators and the practicalities of how the discipline is carried out. The tone is most of the times similar too, as both include a lot of lighthearted comedy moments, fierce competition, as well as some romance and slice of life.

This series/movie adapt some of the best parts of their respective stories. The emotions, the tragedy, the changing of the past, all gave off a very similar vibe. Both are supernatural romance stories, by the way. Clannad: AS is deeper, but Dreaming Girl isn't something to be taken lightly either because it's very touching. Also, you should watch the predecessors to this series/movie first because these are both sequels.

Young soldiers in a collective exorcising possessed people, and the mysterious villainous freaks against them. Fire Force and DGM are very similar for their religious themes, apocalyptic threats, darker mood and gothic outlook (although the former is generally more colorful and comedic). Shinra and Allen are both powerful orphans with a special ability, shunned since early age despite their good nature because of a creepy feature, Arthur/Kanda is the sword-wielding rival, while Tamaki is a newer Lenalee with less clothing.

Heroic firemen and adventurous pirates. Super powers, training sessions and sad backstories. Bad guys, comrades and boobs. Battle shounen, anyone? Their settings, along with the protagonists' goals, may differ but the themes, vibes and characters are akin. We indeed have: the orphaned, highly motivated boy in his late teens; his brother, whom he meets again after years and wishes to save/take back; the older lady simping for the oblivious hero; the muscle head; the self-centered blonde knight; childish comedy; hyperactive action; over the top expressions; questionably written female characters; etc...

"I wanna be a hero!" - wash, rinse and repeat. Battles and boys in Tokyo city. Action-fueled anime enhanced with colorful scenery and designs, they have all the typical shounen themes and tropes: * Outcast but motivated, overpowered protagonist * Friends, rivals and inspirational older figures * Superhuman abilities and the training to control them * Villainous shadowy group * Regular forces and agencies (police, firefighters) working alongside the heroes * Dark/tragic backstories * Childish humour * Females mostly for the purpose of moe/fanservice * Characters with unusual teeth, eyes or other body parts Both series even include plague doctor masks and inventors/mechanics among their supporting cast. Both are PG-13, albeit MHA is usually more cheery while Fire Force gets quite spooky and bloody later on.

Self Hatred, Healing, Detachment and Fear of Dependence. My two most beloved series of all time are too alike in specific areas not to go unnoticed. Protagonists Rei and Touko are unflinchingly determined to reach their life goals, not because they believe that it will make them happy, but because they have been made to believe that it's the only thing they have left. They will sacrifice anything and everything to reach these goals, whether that be their relations with loved ones, their mental/physical health and even their perceived right to seek out help or someone to talk to. When the manga in both series take off both of these protagonists have already been coping with their losses for close to a decade and are now in high school. As a result of the amount of effort they have put in to their work as a coping method for their loss it has elevated them to lofty heights within their own communities. This in turn results in even more immense pressure from the people around them. Eventually however both of our protagonists falter to someone / a group in private, which leaves them prone and in a state of weakness. Yet it is in these moments that their witnesses embrace them and their past, warts and all, which is when our protagonist's view of the world starts to break down and a new lease on life begins for both of them. Deconstructing their unhealthy mindsets takes time however, and in turn their carers will have their own realisations, struggles and moments of desperation/tears as they do their best to take care of our protagonist's. While I can't in good conscience call these anime "Iyashikei" or peaceful due to the character drama that circulates within them. I can say that if you are in need of a series that feels something like a long, warm, emotional hug then one of these two should fit the bill very nicely.

If you're watching these in the present day or after, it's probably because you want to see something sad that will make you cry because you feel numb to the world and want to experience something. Well, good news, Angel Beats fans, you're about to take a nose dive into something that will go further beyond. If you've seen Clannad and not Angel Beats, it's still worth a watch, but isn't as much of a downer.

Both of these heartfelt stories are about a strong willed mother who has been given another chance at a life that was cut short and become young again much to the surprise to their family members. (Though 'reincarnation' is the main driving force for TsumaSho, whereas 「Mom I'm Sorry !」is more supernatural.) The main crux of both shows is about the appreciation of the time spent with the family and how letting go becomes the challenge for each family. They also share some similarities with topics and themes such has single parent challenges, second-hand happiness, domestic abuse and self-martyring/altruism.

Both are more laid back comedy style shows with a bit of slice of life style content here and there. Both shows are very wholesome and enjoyable from start to finish with satisfying endings. The main differences are while one takes the aspect of a old couple turning young and enjoying the end of their lives feeling young with their families. The other takes 2 semi socially awkward high school students becoming friends, making new friends, playing games, and enjoying their high school lives.

Two animes where people fake a marriage for a certain purpose, both shows with Saori Hayami playing as the female MC. Their plots differ where one is faking a family (in which the marriage is also faked plus the additional child) to prevent a war from happening whereas the other is faking a marriage to prevent being transferred to a foreign branch. Genres too are different in that one is a slice of life with lots of action and the other is slice of life leaning towards romance Despite the fakery, the MCs would eventually get closer to each other as both series progresses, Forger family becoming even more like a real family and Rika and Takuya starting to develop real feelings through their act.

At first, the stories seem wholesome and happy, but they also have a dark twist that makes it hard for the characters to live the lives they want. As they try to go back to how things used to be, they realize it’s much harder than they expected. They're both very refreshing, unique animes

Two fantasy comedies where female MCs die at the start and reincarnate back in time to themselves at a younger age with their memories prior to death. Main difference is Tearmoon's MC was evil so killed by her kingdom whereas Yariryuu's MC was good but killed for being erased as evidence and framed. Both MCs would redo the past in order to live, Tearmoon having some romance in whereas Yariryuu is mainly love too. Given the nature of their settings, they can get a bit political too in their world setting.

The same happens in Dark Gathering, where they face the unordinary. Both Aikatsu and Pretty Rhythm (the main series of waccha primagi) often have a lot of similarities, so if you like one it's quite likely you'll like both. Both have wholesome idol dynamics, magic elements, cute girls and CGI performance with the music actually being sang by the voice actor of the character (something that doesn't happen in every idol anime where sometimes seiyuu and singer are two different people). This makes it feel more realistic and close to the actual jpop scene (some people are against this so ymmv). Both also have a focus on duo performances and the idea of a best friend/partner

Edgerunners can basically be considered the modern and more complete interpretation of many of the same ideas as in Oedo 808. The universes are a bit different but many of the topics explored are the same. Both also focus on a cast of deep, interesting characters who are criminals and both deliver on some awesome cybernetic action! Also, if you enjoyed Edgerunners, then you've noticed that the Cyberpunk universe already pulls heavily from the 80s aesthetic, as most works in the medium tend to do. Well, if you wanted to see an actual 80s anime with this aesthetic and with similar themes and vibe, Oedo 808 is the best place to go! Plus there's a lot of surprising overlap in certain weapons, tech, subplots, etc. Even some characters like Gabimaru and Maine look almost identical. Also, cmon, even Hideo Kojima himself made the comparison between these two. Cyberpunk goodness, old and new!
