FAQ:
What is unweighed avg and weighed avg? What's the difference?
Weighed average is the adjusted score of an anime depending on a number of variables. The scores here are all weighed averages.
Unweighed average is the unadjusted 'raw' average of an anime. It's there for reference purposes.
What variables affect weighed avg?
Weighed average is affected by the mean scores and number of people who have seen the show. Here's the rough process:
- For every person that scored the show, their statistical z-score is calculated. This is why your stats are important for the script to run.
- z-score is calculated by the formula (Score of Anime - Mean Score)/Standard Deviation of List
- The z-scores of everyone are averaged. From here, the score is weighed positively if the z-scores trend higher or negatively if they trend lower.
- At this point, a further weight is applied as follows:
You can see that the scores are adjusted down when 50%, 20% or 10% of people have seen the show. Since we are 15 people, the 10% threshold does not apply while the 20% threshold applies at 3 people or less people. The thresholds are applied in a waterfall format. For a show only 3 people have seen, both the 50% and 20% penalty is applied. Shows which more than 7 people have seen do not receive any further adjustment.
Despite everything, some shows still have high weighed avg despite being seen by fewer people. Why?
I was confused at first too and had to check each variable to confirm why. The reason for it is rather simple. The 20% penalty is being applied correctly. However, the z-scores of the shows in question trend higher because of the low means and standard deviations of people who have seen those shows. If those people gave it a 10, then even after the penalty, their scores are still affected positively. Unfortunately, this is a flaw in the system so to speak. The penalties could be made more severe in the future but rerunning the script with different variables would have just been rigging the scores and running the script without knowing what the results would be like was all in the interest of fairness after all.
Should I watch Natsume Yuujinchou?
Yes.
