The first real anime I ever saw as a kid was Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, but the anime and manga that got me hooked on both formats was InuYasha. I got my first volume at 4th grade, after which I started searching episodes online. I was fascinated by the serious tone, the unique animation and art. I have watched anime purposefully ever since.
About Old Ratings:
Be sure to check the date at which I finished any anime if you want look up the scores I have given to them. If it doesn't have one, the rating was based on my memory of the show. The older the date, the more my opinions may have changed. I most likely haven't rewatched the show, so I most likely haven't gotten a good perspective on them. Also, our views may differ etc. All that kind of lame stuff.

Rating System Description: (10-1)
10 Fantastic: In other words, a masterpiece. While watching the show, every session feels like a new experience, it has an insane amount of new ideas that work and pretty much everything feels natural. There can be a couple of failed attemps on performance, but not execution. What I mean by that is that something can be akwardly put, but the message and intention remain intact. Animation doesn't have to be perfect if it compliments the content and genre. If the animation is bad or the music is annoying at all, the score is dropped to 9 instead.
9 Amazing: Just a step down from a masterpiece. There is a couple of downsides that the anime was unable to shake off. These restrinct the performance, execution, pacing and portion of the overall enjoyment of watching the show. One bigger downside is forgivable if everything else about the work stands out positively
8 Great: Last place for the "masterpiece types". A place for anime that define one genre, contain great themes or introduce great new elements that can have very few downsides. These shows can have some undeveloped characters, but they replace them with interesting and enjoyable character traits. Many times these compliment the story and other content.
7 Good: The highest "mediocre score". These shows have problems that are visible to most people, but the good sides mostly cover them. Some score 7 anime have to be forgiven for their bad execution or other downsides. When this is done, they reach out to the masterpiece types such as 8 and 9. Pandering and fanservice are common nowdays to please the audience it was originally directed to, but if it compliments the comedy and style of the anime, it is acceptable.
6 Decent : An anime that has visible problems that leave you waiting for more. Possible plotholes, fanservice and pandering are present and hurt the overall experience. This kind of anime introduces sub-elements that are not complete. They do give a more broader look at the world the anime takes place in + characters get a good chunk of overview and the anime stays loyal to it's genre.
5 Mediocre: The good things are present, the bad things are present and many things are either "unoriginal", ok, meh, "boring", slightly amusing, pretty clever, pretty bad, akward etc. When an anime has both, something amazing and something hideous, it has a good change of getting this score.
4 Bad: Classic case of awful practice being in the way of possibly good anime. This is in most cases the main element of the show. Either the genre is overused or it doesn't introduce anything remarkably new. Bad characters are always present. They don't add anything to the experience and they take the spotlight from the meaningful cast. They can be centered around by different character traits, but they don't add enough variety to highlight the genre that is present. In many cases, the story is very plain and boring. They don't use their valuable assets enough and the lack of creativity leave a lot to be desired.
3 Awful: Unpleasant to any intelligent viewer. More attemps on fanservice than actual valuable character traits or even development. The elements can be present, but they are executed so horribly that they might as well not be in there. Jokes fall flat most of the time, there is an awful inconsistency in the story and the character development is forced which only feeds the inconsistencies. There is possibly a couple of great elements in the show. They are, however, overshadowed by the overwhelming amount of bad ones.
2 Appalling: Awful in almost every way. There can be a couple of things that have some value. A moral, ok comedy, some smooth animation or even a likeable character or 2. The anime has to have a couple of these factors, so it could be saved from the lowest score.
1 Abysmal: The absolute worst score to be given to an anime. There is not a sight of effort. There are no themes or they are awful in every possible perspective. The story is awful or not present and it is filled with fanservice or "pandering". The morale is stupid or sick, the characters are sick and even the animation is unpleasant to look at. There is not a single thing where the show stands out even remotely good ok. There are no attempt for a valuable setting or theme. The pacing is awful, the shots are awful and even the dialogue and acting may be awful.
Reasons for dropping anime
1) Kids' anime and shows with less than 10min episodes (most of the time) that hold no interest to me.
2) Different versions of one anime that I have already watched. Recaps etc.
3) Anime that gave a horrible first impression. (won't drop shows I think are good/enjoyable, of course)
4) Longer running shows that didn't have enough variety.
Thanks for the info. I'd still be going for it though. One of my close friends loved the movie and he watched all 28 Godzilla movies so I'll take his word for it.
I think there was so especially lovable moments that shone through more with the anime than the manga. I think there are more jokes, and the music makes it fun and light. The ending was abrupt with random heavy drama because apparently the director and the mangaka had some argument and ... yeah, it ended on a confusing note. Which made me pick up the manga. I really enjoyed it, as I enjoyed Ouran Host Club. I think some romantic comedy is needed, especially after watching NnA... LOL. I mean, don't expect a 10/10 series, but if you're looking for a light hearted cute series, go for those.
Btw, I noticed you liked Valvrave. What did you think of it? I couldn't go through with it. I'm not sure what exactly I didn't like about it, but I really found it hard to watch past the 3rd episode. I pushed myself to watch until my 5 episode mark. and apparently there's
a rape scene?

I really wanted to like it more, and it is pretty original and interesting compared to other animes of the same genre. I think it did capture growing up and falling in love nicely, but it just dragged out for too long. I marathoned it and some episodes were REALLY emotional, that made me shed a tear, but then it just went on and on and on about one thing. Idk, I'm torn. I did think it was beautiful. It highlighted some really interesting ideas of how we see things when we're growing up.
Fruit Basket is just a guilty pleasure. The anime was SO funny, but the rushed ending kind of ruined it, so I can't give it higher than a 7 (no matter how much I wanted to). I can see a lot of people not liking it, but it's just too cute! have you watched it?
Thank you! Added to my plan to watch. I was kind iffy about One Week Friends but I was impressed with the latest episode. Just because they at least tried to explain things. I thought it would take a weird, "just because" and The Notebook type feeling, but I'm really starting to like it. Kinda original. I just watched the third episode for Haikyuu right now and now I know I'll love it. Have you tried Captain Earth?
Have you found anything worth watching for the new season? I'm not that impressed. Some have an interesting start, while others make me want to stab myself in the eyes with a fork. Nah, they're not that bad but you would think these people will learn that fan service does not = instant success. I'm liking Haikyuu so far. Baby steps seems okay. The Escha and Logy doesn't really impress but might give it a try. Oh and The World is Still Beautiful seems kind of interesting.
Saw your comment for Abarenbou Rikishi!! Matsutarou LOL OMG THE MC IS JUST KILLING ME. The animation and music makes it feel like it's something from the 90's, LOL. Kind of weird that its a 2014 anime. I want to see where it goes but other than a few laughs, I don't know if it'll be a good anime. What do you think of it so far?
I agree with you there that. However, I feel that there should at least be an honest review since everyone else is reviewing the series as a whole and not just the anime itself.
