That goes back to not everyone is like you, I think most of it came as shock to them leaving them speechless. Not everyone is going to have an outspoken personality as you might have. And I still stand by the sister just not being perfect. She is literally just a kid.

Glad they were at least helpful. I look forward to more discussions down the line too, but I do have one more thing to say.

What didn't make sense about Ishida with the Ferris wheel video watching scene? Didn't he feel really bad for her there? I might be remembering wrong. I remember it was Shouko's sister who set up the camera to record to potentially see how those two interacted. And then Shouko's sister and Ishida watched it together finally understanding Shouko more. He literally states I want Nishimiya to like her self. Otherwise, I agree the bridge scene was definitely not super great. Also not sure what you were expecting from his internal dialogue but I thought it was fine, sure he wasn't extremely complex, but I don't think he needed to be. (did you watch this subbed or dubbed? Just kind of curious)

Also, you were supposed to feel irritated at that girl for blasting Ishida. I mean her little sister did try to keep Ishida away at the start, but after he did get in and was positive for her it kind of makes sense that the little sister wasn't keeping them all away from Nishimya anymore. Also, Nishimya's little sister isn't perfect or infallible. She would have a lot on her shoulders to expect to keep everyone potentially harmful to Nishimya away. She even has a conversation with her Grandma where her Grandma points out that she should focus on herself more.

Anyway thanks again for the conversations just had a few things to note on what you said. I didn't mean to continue the conversation if you had wanted it ended sorry about that, but it is interesting for me to learn more about my thoughts on the movie even still. I feel I have an even better understanding of the movie now than I used too. Which is why I have these conversations in the first place.

1. Yeah, she did. It was a really big decision and showed a lot about their culture and how they handle respect. She even told him he needs to be a good boy from now on. I think the aspect of this we need to understand is his mom did nurture him well and his actions did have consequences. Hence how the entire movie is about him trying to make up for what he did as a kid. So he clearly did learn tenderness for later in life. He was also really young when doing the bullying. I mean elementary young.

2. You are fine I would be lying if I said it didn't bother me at all, but I do appreciate your engagement in the conversation. Most people don't do that anymore. Yeah, it would make sense if your situation is different, but I guess that is why I am saying her situation does reflect a lot of other people including me.

3. I know you were not talking about those scenes I brought them up to show you that. I was basically saying after Ishida fell into the water and was put into a coma she would stand outside waiting for Naoka trying to show Naoka she was sorry and to try and make up with her. This pretty much reflects how she has felt her own life. Which is being a nuisance to everyone around her. I gave the example of her writing off the words on his desk as something similar to this because she was trying to help him not go through what she did. I mean the dialogue in this movie was more about his self-redemption and how his response to bullying was different from hers. Hers caused her to put on a fake persona acting like everything was okay until it clearly was to much to handle. His response to bullying showed how he felt bed about him bullying her because he finally understood how she felt. So he went and said I am going to be a better person and make friends with her. And just improve himself. The fact he almost killed himself at the very beginning showed that his bullying almost led to her path which was self-loathing basically. There is a ton to unpack about how they both reacted to their bullying and how they took it, but I would literally have to write an essay going indepth. The TLDR of it is that you were saying they didn't explore the motivations of bullying nor how he felt bad about it, but the entire show is how he being older feels bad and is trying to make up for it.

I guess I added that since I felt I was typing pretty triggered there lol. Fair enough to all that.

3. Not much to add here honestly. I get that your experience lets you converse differently but the show wasn't going over that specific aspect. It was more redemption and how bullying effected her and him differently as he was a bully that got bullied. Which his friends who bullied him did have a reason since they felt betrayed by him.

I obviously feel like it covered a lot, I hope some of what I typed above explains that as I feel it is all quite subtle in how it does it. It doesn't scream at your face nor does it show bullying in a black or white way. I mean the entire movie is about a bully attempting to redeem himself.

Glad you are open for discussion xD

1. As I said before different especially in Japan doesn't go over well. Not sure if you haven't noticed how many bad stereotypes of fat people homosexual people trans people and more in anime. They tend to either be a villain or only there for comedy. Japan's culture is very different from ours so I feel you have to take that into consideration when watching something from Japan. The making her bleed was completely accidental and even as a kid, you could see him start feeling bad about it. Especially after his mom went an injured her own ear to make up for it. It isn't like he grabbed a knife and cut her or something. He was still being mean in the situation but he didn't know he was going to make her bleed. Being aware of showing tenderness doesn't always mean a kid will.

2. The idea wasn't explained but it was explored very well. Everything about her personality being super overly bubbly and cheery and how she used that to shield herself in nearly every scene she was in. I felt like I knew her very well by the end. She reflected a lot of how I felt when I first got into high school. Being overweight and kind of treated completely differently. I am not sure if you have ever had this kind of stuff happen to you but most people who have understood her completely.

3. Never expressed at all in the movie? How about the entire scene of her standing outside for her every day for a long period of time. Sure this was for multiple reasons but we even see her doing this for Ishida when they were kids. She would clean off his desk and would make attempts to be friends with him. Part of this personality of hers got stuck with her as a teenager because she was bullied. Also, I haven't even read the manga this much just makes sense to me. Seems to me like you don't have it covered for a girl lol. I don't mean to be rude but you throwing that out as a defense saying you do understand something when you have clearly admitted you don't understand Nishimiya as a character is funny to me. Like you said your reality is different, but a movie isn't going to always reflect your reality.

3 Cont. The logic going through your life will not be the same for everyone. You act as if a movie isn't reflecting your life exactly than you won't be able to relate. Also just because your classmates don't interact with classmates they don't like doesn't mean another set of students won't. Why are you trying to apply that logic for this movie? It feels like putting bullying into a box which is why I said I don't think you understand mental states for people. I honestly feel people who teach at schools don't understand bullying in general. They all speak about how they have a no tolerance for bullying and I feel it is kind of hilarious that you are a teacher that couldn't understand why a bullied girl would act that way.

You are basically admitting here you just don't understand it rather than the movie not covering it better.

Koe no Katatchi review seems to misunderstand certain things. Going to go through your 3 bullet points.

1. Not sure if you were ever bullied during school but I know I was. I have always been overweight and that fact has caused me to be "different" from other kids during school. Sure it is more common to be overweight then say deaf, but the fact that I was different from normally caused kids to just be straight-up mean to me. Sometimes being slightly different can cause kids to be mean. You also fail to realize that even when they are kids he has a crush on her so some of his behavior is because of this. A lot of times when a kid can't understand their feelings it can make them start coming off like that to the person they have a crush on.

2. Not sure if you have ever been depressed in your life (I know I have) but a lot of the time people hide it with positivity and fake smiles. This isn't something that is super complex, but you act like there is no reason at all for her positivity but it is more so hiding herself. We get to see her actually say how she hates herself when she is finally called out on it from Naoka when they were being filmed in secret. This actually even continues into number 3 of yours.

3. She hates herself because she is different. (which in Japan people who are "different" tend to not be accepted as easily. Japan has a hard time accepting difference in people) This actually adds to why she fakes being positive and why she also keeps trying to be friends with Naoka. She literally just wants to be accepted by her and the others. I don't know why you brought up logic into this, but stuff like this defies logic all the time including in the real world. Suicide itself is illogical and goes against our biological need and want to survive. I feel like you should probably broaden your scope of mental states for people. Not every person is going to follow your logic to an exact tee. In fact, when she finally got pushed over the edge was when she heard from the doctors she was going to lose her hearing in one ear completely. They don't outright say it but her not using one of her hearing aids anymore in her ear shows that.

I don't mean to be rude in my response here, but I felt some criticisms showed a lack of understanding of the characters.
